‘Custody’ Review: Viola Davis Can’t Save This Wildly Messy Lifetime Movie

‘Custody’ Review: Viola Davis Can’t Save This Wildly Messy Lifetime Movie
Custody” is the cliched wedding toast of movies. Actually, it’s the drunken cliched wedding toast of movies, in that it starts by defining the title — “the protective care or guardianship of someone or something,” in case you’re unfamiliar with the lofty legal term — before spiraling wildly off-topic, delving full-on into the lives of the wedding guests and often forgetting why these stories are relevant to the happy couple.

In other words, it’s a mess, and if you’re purely interested in Viola Davis’ involvement, I urge you to skip to the first and only paragraph below staring with “Viola Davis” (or the one ending with “our beloved Vi Vi”).

To continue the wedding analogy, the happy couple at the heart of “Custody” is Sara Diaz (Catalina Sandino Moreno) and her kids. A single mother working at a dry cleaner, Diaz is constantly worried about her kids getting into trouble,

Tyler Perry, Lionsgate Partner on Another Madea Movie

Tyler Perry, Lionsgate Partner on Another Madea Movie
Tyler Perry and Lionsgate will partner on two more films, one of which will be a Madea movie.

The announcement comes on the heels of the box office success of “Boo! A Madea Halloween,” which has made $56.5 million domestically on a $20 million budget. Perry has been a staple of Lionsgate’s slates, with the studio releasing the likes of “Madea’s Witness Protection,” “Madea Goes to Jail,” and “Alex Cross,” all of which featured the actor. Together they have made nearly 20 films. Madea is the truth-telling grandmother character that Perry created and essays on screen. Critics tend to hate the films, but they have a loyal and devoted fanbase.

Lionsgate did not give any details about the other Perry project.

Lionsgate chief Jon Feltheimer announced that the studio would continue to be in the Perry business on a call with analysts following the company’s quarterly earnings release. Lionsgate also

Box Office Top 10 Takeaways: Tyler Perry’s ‘Madea’ Slams Down Ron Howard’s ‘Inferno’

Box Office Top 10 Takeaways: Tyler Perry’s ‘Madea’ Slams Down Ron Howard’s ‘Inferno’
This is a weekend up ups and downs. Grosses compared to last year are up, and a sleeper success repeated at #1 with Tyler Perry’s return to form, “Boo! A Madea Halloween” (Lionsgate).

Surprisingly, the week brought for the first time in a long while a limited release Indian film. Fox’s production of “Ai Dil Hai Mushkil” took in over $2.1 million in only 307 theaters. Meantime, in only 36 theaters the year’s best-reviewed movie “Moonlight” grossed $900,000.

The next few weeks are among the most crucial of the year, with some hope that fortunes might be improving.

The Top Ten

1. Boo: A Madea Halloween (Lionsgate) Week 2 – Last weekend #1

$16,675,000 (-41%) in 2,299 theaters (+39); PTA (per theater average): $7,253; Cumulative: $52,019,000

2. Inferno (Sony) New – Cinemascore: B+; Metacritic: 44; est. budget: $75 million

$15,000,000 in 3,576 theaters; PTA: $4,195; Cumulative: $15,000,000

3. Jack Reacher: Never Go Back (Paramount) Week 2 – Last weekend #2

$9,550,000 (-58%) in 3,780 theaters (no change); PTA: $2,526; Cumulative: $39,679,000

‘Boo! A Madea Halloween’ Scares Off ‘Inferno,’ ‘Doctor Strange’ Conjures Solid International Opening [Box Office]

First Tyler Perry swatted away Tom Cruise, and now he’s overpowered Tom Hanks: For the second straight week, “Boo! A Madea Halloween” has topped the box office. The latest franchise entry saw only a 41% drop as it headed into its second weekend, adding $16.6 million to the bottom line. This doesn’t particularly change much of the narrative around ‘Madea Halloween,’ as it’s still on track to finish among the best in the series “Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Family Reunion” ($63 million domestic) and “Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Witness Protection” ($65 million domestic), and possibly overtake them, but still finish behind the all-time topper “Tyler Perry’s Madea Goes to Jail” ($91 million domestic).

Box Office: Boo! A Madea Halloween Scares Jack Reacher Sequel

Boo! A Madea Halloween gave the series its best debut in over 7 years, topping the weekend ahead of Tom Cruise starring sequel Jack Reacher: Never Go Back. Boo! Tyler Perry scores big and beats Tom Cruise with Boo! A Madea Halloween as it opens to $27 million

Released in the run-up to All Hallow’s Eve, not many people gave Tyler Perry’s Boo! A Madea Halloween a fighting chance as it competed against the Tom Cruise-starring Jack Reacher: Never Go Back and horror prequel Ouija: Origin of Evil, but the comedy spoof beat them both.

Screening in significantly less theatres than both Jack Reacher: Never Go Back and Ouija: Origin of Evil, Boo! A Madea Halloween averaged £12k per screen to earn $27.6 million. It’s the biggest opening for a Madea movie directed by Tyler Perry since 2009’s Madea Goes to Jail. The film also scored an A ranking on CimenaScore, which means a $50-70 million domestic haul is easily within reach. Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Witness Protection opened to £25 million and earned $66 million overall.

Boo! A Medea Halloween had a budget of $20 million.

Boo! A Madea Halloween Beats Jack Reacher 2 at the Weekend Box Office

Boo! A Madea Halloween Beats Jack Reacher 2 at the Weekend Box Office
The third weekend in October is starting to become the new home for the most crowded frame of the year. Last year, four new movies opened in wide release (The Last Witch Hunter, Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension, Rock the Kasbah and Jem and the Holograms, although none could beat The Martian, and two (Rock the Kasbah and Jem and the Holograms) didn't even crack the top 10. This year, four more new movies opened in wide release, Lionsgate's new Madea movie Boo! A Madea Halloween, Paramount's Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, Universal's Ouija: Origin of Evil and 20th Century Fox's Keeping Up With the Joneses. While all four new releases did crack the top 10, Boo! A Madea Halloween took the top spot with $27.6 million.

Box Office Mojo reports that, despite opening in the fewest theaters among new releases this weekend (2,260), it easily had the best per-screen average with $12,212. However, this

Top 10 Takeaways: Movie Star Brands Tyler Perry and Tom Cruise Boost Box Office

Top 10 Takeaways: Movie Star Brands Tyler Perry and Tom Cruise Boost Box Office
This weekend’s openers did not look like standouts on paper. But two star vehicles, Tyler Perry’s “Boo! A Madea Halloween” (Lionsgate) and Tom Cruise’s “Jack Reacher: Never Look Back” (Paramount), both exceeded their expected $20 million openings. The reason? They gave moviegoers, who may be feeling a tad rattled during this tempestuous election season, something familiar and safe.

Add in the middling “Ouija: Origin of Evil” (Universal) and the flop “Keeping Up With the Joneses” (20th Century Fox) and the unusually heavy release schedule (before the must-to-avoid Halloween weekend) reversed recent sliding gross totals. Temporary? We’ll see. But it’s better news for sure.

The Top Ten

1. Boo! A Madea Halloween (Lionsgate) New – Cinemascore: A; Metacritic: 34; Est. budget: $20 million

$27,600,000 in 2,260 theaters; PTA (per theater average): $12,212; Cumulative: $27,600,000

2. Jack Reacher: Never Look Back (Paramount) New – Cinemascore: B+; Metacritic: 47 ; Est. budget: $60 million

Boo! 'Madea' Tops 'Reacher' Sequel, 'Moonlight' Huge in Limited Release

Boo! 'Madea' Tops 'Reacher' Sequel, 'Moonlight' Huge in Limited Release
There is plenty to discuss in a weekend where Lionsgate's Boo! A Madea Halloween is crowned champion of the largest three-day weekend the 2016 box office has seen in over two months. Boo!, along with fellow new releases Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, Ouija: Origin of Evil and Keeping Up with the Joneses, generated 61.6% of the top twelve's overall gross of nearly $114 million, up 28% from last weekend and up 20% from last year. The weekend also saw a stellar opening for A24's Moonlight in limited release, delivering the largest opening per theater average of the year, and there are plenty of overseas results to discuss. Topping the weekend box office, Tyler Perry's Boo! A Madea Halloween brought in a stellar $27.6 million from 2,260 theaters ($12,212 PTA), the largest opening for a Madea branded feature and for a Tyler Perry-directed film overall since 2009's Madea Goes to Jail. As far as Madea-branded titles are concerned,

[Review] Boo! A Madea Halloween

You know you are in trouble when the funniest part of a movie is Madea’s discussion of her retirement account. (She calls it her “Ho-01K” account, because she couldn’t open a 401K due to her illegal income.) Yes, it might finally be time to pull the plug on Madea, the strong-willed former stripper who just so happens to be everybody’s wacky aunt.

In his latest outing, the man behind Madea seems bored with his own creation, yet Tyler Perry only has himself to blame as writer, director, star, producer, and executive. His usual freedom and autonomy to green-light any project has led to interesting work the studio system might have passed on, like Daddy’s Little Girls and the somewhat brilliant Why Did I Get Married Too?. As of late, Perry has slowed down on the theatrical side, leaving an unusual two-year gap between his latest
