On the one hand, it shows in fair detail the girl growing up under enormous pressure and expectations. It shows her desperate lack of self-confidence, her hurt and isolation. Her drive to succeed is impressive.
It also shows her finally (finally!) growing up into an adult and finding that the system is rigged and that she should focus on what she wants, rather than what others want of her. The political moment at the end shows her awakening as an adult at the age of 30. Interesting and valid contrast to the silence and fears of earlier years.
However I cannot give it 10/10 - the director fails to show us much beyond what is already known. She fails to show what other people have to say. A small number of friends get token moments, but nothing that encompasses anything beyond a very, very narrow view of Taylor, by Taylor, of Taylor.
Could have been an absolute tour-de-force. Taylor is much more than what was shown. Instead it's just a very good, brief, insight into the strange world that Pop-icon girls growing up in the USA live within.
