Waldemar, a young man from Suriname, meets middle-aged Dutch woman Rika and they fall in love. In pre-WWII Netherlands they could not be more different. The one black, the other white, 17 years between them and on top of that she already has four children with another man. They love each other, but then she appears to be pregnant from Waldemar. They choose each other despite the high price they have to pay for it. They have a son, Waldy, their own 'Sonny Boy'. Then World War II breaks out and they risk their lives to save people in hiding. However, this is not without major consequences .

The real-life Waldy Nods, son of Waldemar and Rika Nods, attended the film's premiere in Suriname at age 81, four years before he passed away. He responded favorably to the film, stating that "every time I see their image, I fall in love with those two people playing my parents". See more
When Rika is in the camps, sitting outside in the rain, she has a flashback to an earlier scene that took place shortly after Waldemar moved in and they were all dancing outside in the rain with her young children. In the Flashback, Sonny Boy (who's not born yet at that time) appears as a teenager dancing in the rain as well. See more
