Lance Henriksen plays a television producer named Dick Lobo; this character is supposedly based on Law & Order (1990) creator Dick Wolf. Lobo means wolf in Spanish.

Michael Clarke Duncan's character "Cleon" states that he's afraid of the dark. This is a direct nod to his character "John Coffey" from "The Green Mile" (1999) who is also afraid of the dark.

The disease the Lone Diner says he is dying of, Schistosomiasis, is a parasitic "flatworm" infection carried by freshwater snails in Africa. Schistosomiasis is one of the most common parasitic disease in primitive areas. Schistosomiasis is almost never directly fatal, but a chronic years-long infection can cause organ damage, several cancers, and in children can cause developmental problems. Schistosomiasis rather easily cured with Praziquantel.
