At the end of “Balcony Man,” Nick Cave’s ponderous and playful song about hope, romance, and grief, he sings, “What doesn’t kill you just makes you crazier.” The words are a wry twist on Friedrich Nietzsche’s famous aphorism — but Cave says they’re also an improvement upon it.
“I don’t think Nietzsche’s quote of ‘What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger’ is remotely true,” he says. “It is bad, unhelpful information that suggests we are somehow weak if we succumb to our griefs. It lacks compassion.

A finely-tuned, nuanced true-life tale about a couple of South Boston small-time hoods, actor-turned-director Brian Goodman gives .What Doesn.t Kill You. a lived-in realism and provides a subtle acting showcase for headliners Ethan Hawke and Mark Ruffalo. Although marketing sold this as a somewhat poor man.s version of .The Departed., Goodman has more on his mind than just gangster hijinks. This is more a story of a man trying to right wrongs and fight against his criminal instincts to be there for a long-neglected family with Ruffalo adding depth to a father character that.s desperate to escape crime to save his family. The film starts with one of those .inevitable. prologues, showing a sequence that hints at...

Yari Film Group's releasing division has gone into involuntary Chapter 11 bankruptcy, effective immediately. Although the staff was laid off December 12 and the operation was stopped, it is still moving forward with a limited qualifying run for the crime drama What Doesn't Kill You, which already opened in New York and Los Angeles, as well with Nothing But The Truth in the same cities. The company will continue on production on the long gestating Killing Pablo as well as The Governess, which were announced earlier this year. The production arms are distinct entities with separate financing, which remain unaffected by the legal proceedings.

Based on events from director Brian GoodmanÂ.s life, Â.What DoesnÂ.t Kill YouÂ. stars Mark Ruffalo (Brian) and Ethan Hawke (Paulie) as friends who grew up like brothers on the gritty streets of south Boston.
{sidebar id=1}They do whatever it takes to survive, living by the code of their dog-eat-dog neighborhood.
Petty crimes and misdemeanors grow into more serious offenses and eventually, they fall under sway to organized crime boss Pat Kelly (played by Goodman).
As Brian becomes increasingly lost in a haze of drugs and Â.jobs,Â. even the love he has for his wife (Amanda Peet) and his children does not seem like it will be enough to redeem him.
Meanwhile, Paulie plans Â.one last heistÂ. but knows it will take both of them to pull it off. How can they escape the only life they know?
