Storyline

The Better Hour is the story of a man who, inspired by faith, used his political and social influence to change the world for the better. At the beginning of the 19th century, almost a third of the British economy depended on the trade of human beings. William Wilberforce was determined to end this horrific practice, by persuading both Parliament and British society to abolish slavery in the British Empire. Written by Anonymous

Very inspiring....
17 September 2011 | by MartinHaferSee all my reviews

The PBS documentary is narrated by Avery Brooks and my wife commented about how beautiful and effective his voice sounded. The show is about the abolition movement in Britain--in particular the work of William Wilberforce. His tireless campaign is very, very inspiring. This is a bit unusual because here in the States, few documentaries about slavery talk about the Brits--even though they outlawed this evil institution well before the US Civil War and their movement strongly impacted the abolitionists in this country.

This is a very unusual documentary in that it really pulled the viewer into it emotionally. Starting out very slowly, the film builds and builds to a rousing finale. A great example of the filmmaker manipulating (in a positive way) the viewer. Exceptionally informative and well-crafted. Well worth seeing!
