Michael Kaplan (‘The Alienist’ costume designer) waited 24 years to work on this ‘designer’s dream’ [Exclusive Video Interview]

Costume designer Michael Kaplan‘s interest in “The Alienist” stretches back to when Caleb Carr‘s original novel was first published in 1994. “I just loved so many elements of it,” he recalls. “It seemed like a designer’s dream to be able to illuminate everything that was going on in 1896.” Produced by Cary Joji Fukunaga (“True Detective”), this TNT limited series focuses on a newspaper illustrator (Luke Evans) who teams up with a criminal psychologist (Daniel Brühl) and a headstrong NYPD secretary (Dakota Fanning) to investigate a serial killer in 19th century New York City. Kaplan kept a close watch on the project’s development for 24 years before finally landing the job. Watch our exclusive video interview with Kaplan above.

Soundtracking: "Burlesque"

by Chris Feil

Much as we love it, isn’t Burlesque one of our least distinct recent original musicals? The genre is no stranger to borrowing tropes that have worked in the past and Burlesque is no exception - dreams of stardom, vague romance, putting on a show to save the barn. The real culprit here the film’s mishmash assemblage of tunes, populated with high peaks and easily ignored plains.

But I should shut up because really: who cares? It’s Cher, bitch!

And oft repeated quotables aside, the presence of a singing and dancing Cher on screen is a now rare delight that shouldn’t be taken for granted. Some are quick to forget that Cher is always in on the joke, or that her lack of pretension makes opulence where more self-serious performers would be trapped in chintziness...

Suits Season 7 Episode 14 Review: Pulling the Goalie

Did Louis just find a way to redeem himself after a string of downright terrible decisions?

It sure felt that way on Suits Season 7 Episode 14, which certainly seemed like an hour that was all about undoing some of the awful stuff the characters have done of late.

I never thought things could possibly get any more complicated for the Louis, Sheila, and Xander love triangle, but I was mistaken.

It was true to the character of Louis to have him get ready to destroy Xander in the courtroom, but it was still rather silly.

It boggled my mind that Xander never managed to put two and two together to figure out there was something going on between Sheila and her ex.

When the smug lawyer was talking about Louis being a distant memory to Sheila down the line, it was obvious something was going to happen to swing the ball back into Louis' court.

‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ 10 episode 1 recap: Which queen was the fiercest in the season premiere ’10s Across the Board’? [Updating Live]

Season 10 of the Emmy-winning “RuPaul’s Drag Race” kicked off on VH1 on Thursday (March 22), with a sizzling premiere that showcased the 14 fierce queens in the competition. Among these hopefuls is season 9 contestant Eureka, who had to bow out of the show after an injury. The premiere, titled “10s Across the Board,” also featured a hotly anticipated appearance by pop music icon and star of “BurlesqueChristina Aguilera!

Based on our exclusive predictions, Aquaria is the early favorite to win. This 21 year-old from Brooklyn is the youngest queen in the competition and has odds of 2/1 to take the title. Close behind with odds of 4/1 is Asia O’Hara who, at 35, is one of the two oldest contestants (Mayhem Miller is also 35). Sometimes, the first episode of “Drag Race” does not end with an elimination. If it does, we are predicting that Kalorie Karbdashian-Williams will be bounced.

Mary J. Blige Joins Illustrious Group of Golden Globes Double Music-Acting Nominees

Mary J. Blige Joins Illustrious Group of Golden Globes Double Music-Acting Nominees
Perhaps the most surprising double-nomination for this year’s Golden Globes: the twin nods given to Mary J. Blige for best supporting actress and best song — for the film “Mudbound” and its song “Mighty River.” With those, Blige becomes the first performer to be simultaneously nominated in song and acting since John C. Reilly got dual nods for “Walk Hard” 10 years ago. Barbra Streisand, Bjork, Beyonce and Dolly Parton are the other female singer/actors who have scored nominations in both categories in the past, while Reilly and Neil Diamond are the male dual nominees. Only Streisand has won both (for the 1976 film “A Star Is Born”).

Few other surprises popped up in the Globes’ music categories. Other best song contenders include “Remember Me” from “Coco” and “This is Me” from “The Greatest Showman,” both of which are frequently cited as among the frontrunners in the Oscars’ best song contest.

Two songs sung

‘The Disaster Artist’ Mined Podcast ‘How Did This Get Made’ for Inspiration

‘The Disaster Artist’ Mined Podcast ‘How Did This Get Made’ for Inspiration
James Franco’s “The Disaster Artist” has been racking up strong box office and rapturous reviews since its limited release Dec. 1 (it went wide Dec. 8), but few know that the popular Earwolf podcast “How Did This Get Made?,” hosted by Paul Scheer, June Diane Raphael and Jason Mantzoukas, played a seminal role in getting the film to the big screen.

The latest podcast revisits “Artist’s” origin story, Tommy Wiseau’s “The Room,” which many have named as the worst movie ever made, but which took off as a cult hit in L.A. and spread globally over the early 2000s. James Franco, Dave Franco, Seth Rogen, Ari Graynor, writers Michael H. Webber and Scott Neustadter, “The Room’s” Greg Sestero, and Wiseau visit the “Hdtgm” studio, and the episode also includes the 2011 “Hdtgm” episode (#23) on “The Room” with Steve Heisler from The Av Club and “Room” multihyphenate Sestero (earwolf.com/show/how-did-this-get-made).

Coming Distractions: Tease yourself with a clip from the new Burlesque documentary, Heart Of The Glitter Tribe

Burlesque has exploded as an art form in recent years, with performers of all ages, creeds, and styles coming together to celebrate the ridiculous splendor and skill of hopping up on stage and baring it all (or most) as a larger-than-life character. As with any nascent movement, there have been questionable efforts in the past to try to capture what makes burlesque so fun—looking at you, Cher and Christina Aguilera—but fans of the tease are in luck, with a new documentary here to serve as an easy entry point for its gaudy, fantastical world.

Titled Burlesque: Heart Of The Glitter Tribe, and directed by Jon Manning, the doc hopes to explore every aspect of the burlesque world; not just sexuality, but playfulness, goofiness, and artistry as well. We’ve got a clip from the film for you, viewable above, discussing the intersections between the craft and burlesque movements
