R-rated movies can, at times, be a gamble for studios to produce. Since they aren't friendly to younger audiences, they alienate a large percentage of the population, especially since parents can't go with their children to see these movies. Often, they don't perform as well as the studios hope, leading them to put out fewer of them yearly.
However, at times, an R-rated movie hits it out of the park and performs infinitely better than anyone expected it to. Typically, these are sequels or later entries to an existing franchise, like a comic book film that dares to push the limits of the genre's established conventions. These are the ten highest-performing films within the rating category.

Bradley Cooper’s talents could aptly be summarized with the title of one of his films, Limitless. With over two decades dedicated to Hollywood, he’s undeniably one of its biggest stars. From the success of The Hangover series to his MCU journey as Rocket in The Guardians of the Galaxy, he has done quite a lot to cement his name in the industry.
Yet, despite his immense success, he hadn’t quite felt welcomed into “the club.” It was his recent departure into more serious roles, including stepping into a role replacing Leonardo DiCaprio, that allowed him to confront the insecurities and emotions he’d accrued over the years.

Bradley Cooper is unhesitant and unequivocally bold while listing out his thoughts. Especially when it comes to the projects he takes on, he doesn’t waver to let everyone know his thoughts on the story he has chosen to work on. This is why he was almost willing to quit the very movie that had Ryan Gosling head over heels in love with the actress who later became his wife, Eva Mendes.
Bradley Cooper in The Hangover.
Yes, the film in talks here is none other than the indie masterpiece by Derek Cianfrance from 2013, The Place Beyond the Pines — also the film that started the Gosling-Mendes love story. And the reason why Cooper was so hell-bent on quitting the project after getting on board was the rewrites and the new draft presented to him, which was, quite simply, not what he had in mind for the movie.

Fast & Furious saw a significant shift from street racing to high-octane action after Fast Five. Ghostbusters, Transformers, & Indiana Jones maintain repetitive patterns in their storytelling. Saw, The Hangover, Ice Age, and Scary Movie focus on recurring themes and storylines across each movie.
Franchises are currently dominating the box office and are highly coveted by studios seeking to make the biggest return on their investment, but as a result, some franchises do end up with incredibly repetitive movies. While movies having sequels and even trilogies have long been a part of cinema, franchises have never had the same presence as they do in the current cinematic landscape until the last two decades. Singer-turned-actor Frank Sinatra badly wanted to play The Joker on Batman to showcase his acting chops, recognizing the artistic value of the role. He was right to be interested in the role, the outwardly trivial Joker character luring in top-tier actors for its complexity and prestige in the coming decades. Actors like Heath Ledger and Joaquin Phoenix redefined the gangster, turning a comic villain into a true icon, no longer needing Batman to flesh out the character.
What do Heath Ledger, Mark Hamill, and Frank Sinatra have in common? Not much, but had the Batman TV show producers taken Ol' Blue Eyes up on his offer, we might have witnessed one of the weirdest transformations in pop culture history. Sadly, we'll never get to find out how Frank Sinatra got those scars.

Saban Films announced today the acquisition of worldwide rights to the upcoming comedy The 4:30 Movie, directed and written by Kevin Smith.
Set in the summer of 1986, The 4:30 Movie is a coming-of-age story about three sixteen-year-old friends who spend their Saturdays sneaking into movies at the local multiplex. But when one of the guys also invites the girl of his dreams (Siena Agudong) to see the latest comedy, each of the teens will learn something serious about life and love before the credits roll.
Set in the mobile phoneless, social media-free era of the ’80s, Smith shot The 4:30 Movie at his Smodcastle Cinemas in New Jersey—the same movie theater he haunted every weekend as a teenager. Judd Apatow does not believe comedy movies are dead in theaters. While the genre has largely moved to streaming in recent years, Apatow recently told Vulture that all it will take is one comedy blockbuster in theaters to swing the pendulum away from streaming. Actually, that may have already happened in his eyes.
“I would say that’s wrong because the highest-grossing comedy last year made over a billion dollars,” Apatow said when asked about movie theaters no longer being a venue for comedy movies. “‘Barbie’ was a comedy, you know?”
“But isn’t that like saying a Marvel movie is a comedy?” Vulture asked.
“I don’t think so. It’s not a drama,” Apatow responded. “There are some emotional moments in it, but it’s just wall-to-wall jokes. There’s something about it where I feel like no one wants to give comedy the win there. Like, why...

There is no denying that theaters are losing their charm thanks to streaming platforms like Netflix. People now would much rather prefer paying a monthly fee and enjoying more content than ever before in the comfort of their own homes. Now, it takes films like Barbie and Oppenheimer to drive people to theater halls and experience cinema first-hand.

Judd Apatow is warning against the rise of rewatching and the implications it has for streamers not to greenlight new series.
The writer/director/producer told Vulture that Warner Bros. Discovery and HBO licensing shows like “Sex and the City” to Netflix is just a recent example of limiting audiences’ “content” options, which is no doubt “cheaper than making new ones.”
“I’m of two minds,” Apatow said of the rise of viewers rediscovering older series. “There’s a part of me that’s an audience member: I’ll go back and rewatch ‘Deadwood’ or ‘NYPD Blue’ or any of the David Milch shows. I understand why people like the comfort food of television. But it’s a scary thing as a creator of television, because of all the streamers going, ‘Wait a second. We don’t need to spend $200 million on a new show. We can just bring back “Barnaby Jones.

Iraq War Vet Jay Dorleus finds inaccuracies in War Dogs' vehicle chase scene in the Middle East, revealing insurgents did not use the tactics depicted. The 2016 movie stars Jonah Hill and Miles Teller as two young arms dealers who win a contract from the Pentagon. War Dogs earned mostly positive reviews from critics but was a box office disappointment.

Bradley Cooper is still recovering from the Best Actor Oscar loss to Cillian Murphy. Cooper earlier revealed to multiple sources that he spent six years in training to play the role of American conductor and composer Leonard Bernstein in Maestro. His six-year training was put to intense scrutiny when his conducting scene from Maestro was examined by classical music experts.
Bradley Cooper in Maestro (2023)
According to the experts, Cooper did a decent job than most other actors, who they knew butchered the music scenes. However, there were pretty basic flaws in the conducting that may force fans to question the time spent on training for the musician’s role.

From unhinged villains to dim-witted heroes, some movie comedy characters are too over-the-top to exist in the real world. Mr. Chow, Austin Powers, and Captain Jack Sparrow are examples of characters that push the boundaries of believability in film comedies. While absurd and entertaining on screen, characters like Buddy the Elf and Harry and Lloyd from Dumb and Dumber could never exist in reality.
Part of the appeal of comedy characters in movies was their eccentric and over-the-top nature, but occasionally, some characters were just too outrageous to believably exist in the real world. From unhinged wildcards to extraordinarily dim-witted buffoons, the movie comedy landscape has had plenty of uniquely bizarre and idiosyncratic creations that if a viewer were to encounter in their day-to-day lives, they would feel like they’ve just stepped into another world. Movies like Project X showcase wild parties and unbreakable youth friendships over the course of one chaotic night. The film revitalized the partying subgenre by playing with teen comedy tropes and adapting conventions to a found footage style. Project X's influence on pop culture has been significant, inspiring real-life teens to throw wild parties and offering a unique viewing experience.
Movies like Project X deliver the wild parties and the unbreakable friendship of youth. The 2012 film takes place over the course of one night while following Thomas, Costa, and J.B., three unpopular high school seniors committed to throwing the party of their lives. What seems like the trio's final attempt to do something remarkable during their school years quickly goes off the rails, with the party growing increasingly absurd and out of hand.
Project X wasn't the first comedy about non-stop partying, but it helped revitalize the subgenre.

Just a decade ago, who could have predicted the guy known primarily for “The Hangover” movies and TV shows like “Alias” would become a 12-time Oscar nominee? Bradley Cooper has had one of the strongest Academy Awards narratives since 2012, first being recognized for his starring role in “Silver Linings Playbook” and nominated again for his most recent trio of Oscars for producing, writing and acting in “Maestro” (2023). While all of those bids are wonderful, the fact remains that Cooper still has yet to win the little gold man. Bradley Cooper left the 2024 Oscars empty-handed on Sunday, but the best actor nominee for Maestro got a moment to shine among the staff and students of one of TV’s biggest shows when he appeared on the episode of Abbott Elementary that immediately followed the ceremony.
Cooper, whose passion project Maestro was nominated for seven Academy Awards but won none, took a self-deprecating turn in the cameo as himself on ABC’s award-winning hit comedy. In the episode’s opening moments, the star of the biopic focusing on legendary composer Leonard Bernstein’s tormented personal life is seen at the titular school as the guest of a second-grader pal, Kaleel, but the class fails to recognize the star.
“Oh, I just loved you in The Holdovers. It was just so heartwarming,” Barbara (Sheryl Lee Ralph) tells Cooper, perhaps mistaking him for Paul Giamatti, who was also up for best actor for that movie this year.

Bradley Cooper may not have won an Oscar, but he did win a role on “Abbott Elementary.”
The “Maestro” actor stopped by to play himself in the cold open of the “Abbott” episode that aired directly after ABC’s telecast of the 96th Academy Awards. In the scene, a student in Melissa’s (Lisa Ann Walter) class brings Cooper to campus.
“Whenever I’m in Philly, you know the deli across the street? That’s my first stop,” the Pennsylvania native says. “My dad used to always take me there. They have the best hoagies in the city.” His second grade friend retorts, “Everybody wanted to take a picture with him, so I figured he was famous.”
Though the scene was obviously taped well before the Oscars, it doesn’t seem the “Abbott Elementary” writers were predicting a win for Cooper, instead allowing him to self deprecate about his much-talked about Oscar campaign.

Ricky Stanicky releases to Prime on March 7, 2024.
Peter Farrelly is an oddly controversial filmmaker. I say oddly because we’re talking about the writer-director of very popular films like Dumb and Dumber or the highly awarded Green Book – I maintain my potentially hot take that it’s one of the best drama-comedies of the last decade – but the general opinion surrounding Farrelly isn’t as positive as I expected. Personally, his sense of humor fits perfectly with the type of comedy I appreciate most, so I was naturally excited for Ricky Stanicky.
The premise is similar to so many others that have captivated audiences all around the world – notably The Hangover saga. Ricky Stanicky is the title of the movie, but also of an imaginary friend invented by a trio of childhood friends as someone they could use to deflect the blame for their misbehavior or serve as an excuse to skip uninteresting,...

Zack Galifianakis suggests that making Hangover 4 an animated, family-friendly film could breathe new life into the franchise. The Hangover movies faced criticism for repeating the same storylines and straying from what made the original great, but an animated approach could offer a fresh take. The popularity of R-rated animated content, such as shows like Bojack Horseman and Big Mouth, suggests that there is a market for adult animation, potentially making Hangover 4 successful.
The Hangover franchise is seemingly on hiatus with no new movie in development, but Zack Galifianakis's wild Hangover 4 plan could save it. The Hangover was released in 2009 and became a phenomenal hit. It wasn't completely original, as it had the tried-and-true premise of a group of friends who have to retrace their steps the morning after an outrageous night. However, the film was laugh-out-loud funny, featured instantly iconic characters, and a cast that clearly had chemistry. Despite not being influential in many ways,...

With many of the winners of the Academy Awards now looking set in stone, there’s one question that we still have to ask. How will returning host Jimmy Kimmel do on his fourth try? His previous gigs were in 2017, 2018 and last year. He’s always been great. But this year, he’ll be better than ever… if he decides to deliver the following Oscars monologue. Mr. Kimmel — here you go.
1. Good evening and welcome to the Academy Awards. Or as it’s known this year, the “OppenOscars.” That’s right. There are 10 films vying for Best Picture. One of them is “Oppenheimer.” The other nine are all “Poor Things.”
2. I’m Jimmy Kimmel, father of the atomic joke and your Oscars host. And good news. Best Actor nominee Cillian Murphy can assure you that there’s a “near zero” chance that I’ll bomb tonight. I can just hear Matt Damon’s melodramatic response.

There isn't a bigger name in Hollywood right now than Bradley Cooper. His ability to deliver impactful performances across various genres makes him one of the most sought-after actors in the entertainment business. At just 49 years old, the Pennsylvania native's career is over twenty years old. It is going as strong as ever, coming off an Oscar-caliber performance in the recent biopic Maestro, about the life and career of legendary conductor Leonard Bernstein, which he also directed. From laugh-out-loud comedy turns in The Hangover franchise to heavy drama pieces like A Star is Born, Cooper can do it all. But all show business careers have to start somewhere, and Cooper has a unique story surrounding his first role in his first feature film, the cult classic ensemble comedy Wet Hot American Summer. Cooper chose to skip his college graduation to be in it, and it looked like a bad call...

Comedy sequels are incredibly risky endeavors, but very common. Whether it’s Weekend at Bernie’s, The Hangover, Horrible Bosses, or even the Marlon Wayans/Adam Sandler comedy vehicle Bulletproof, if the first movie made money, it'll likely get a sequel. Given that Wedding Crashers, starring Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson, was one of the biggest movies of 2005, one would imagine that a sequel to that feature would’ve been inevitable. Weirdly, this has yet to happen, but of course, Hollywood has made a valiant effort. The R-rated comedy remains, nearly two decades after its initial release, without a sequel. However, there have been several attempts to get another Wedding Crashers movie off the ground, including one from the early 2020s that got shockingly close to becoming a reality.

The film revolved around music, love, and more subjective themes and the complicated love life between music composer Leonard Bernstein, played by Cooper, and Felicia Montealegre, played by Carey Mulligan. Cooper co-wrote and directed apart from starring in the biographical romantic drama.
