- Detective Grimoire and Sally Spears arrive at Tangle Tower at the anonymous request to investigate the mysterious circumstances around Freya Fellow's death. Nine suspects were listed because they were around the tower when the murder happened.
According to the case file, Freya was found lying face-up in front of a painting of her relative Flora Fellow. The painting seemed to have Flora's likeness with a knife coated in blood. Upon further investigation, the paint was revealed to be actual blood. The mystery surrounding Tangle Tower gets stranger with every passing second.
Near the end of the game, it is revealed that the 'painting Flora' was holding a feather with a red tip, commemorating her lost bird, Poppy used to be all pink and bubbly, and Fiona held Freya's diary when she died.
They also discover that Tangle Tower used to be a mystid laboratory for the ancestors, calling themselves the Ambassadors of Mystid Mansion. When Grimoire and Sally discover the abandoned laboratory, every single trace was burned. The Ambassadors had all left without a trace.
It is revealed that the true killer of Freya Fellow was none other than Penelope Pointer, posing as Detective Hawkshaw. Penelope, not wanting to give up on the possible prospect of finding her role in life, used Freya's painting of her nightmare to bring life to Hawkshaw, something Freya would not have liked. Freya would have left, but because Fiona Fellow didn't want to leave, she stayed. Freya discovered the study before Penelope did, which is why Freya had to die.
She set up an elaborate trap for Freya -- she stuffed the Golden Beetle inside the gramophone to amplify the frequency, causing all those in the room (Freya and Flora) to fall unconscious. Then, Penelope waited in the attic until both Freya and Flora got knocked out. Flora was caught in the crossfire, but Penelope made sure she wouldn't have to witness the murder. Using a modified crossbow, she used the knife as a bolt and shot it through the hole in the floorboards, landing on Freya's chest. When the deed was done, she simply reeled the knife back up with the string attached to the hilt.
When Grimoire and Sally confront Penelope about the beetle, she states that the reason she was after the Golden Beetle is not for the 90% identical to gold, but the unknown 10%. When Sally asked Penelope why she didn't leave sooner, Penelope simply said she'd rather not leave without 'it'. Sally realizes that the beetle is still inside the gramophone, but before long, Penelope's bird taps the gramophone, causing the beetle to hiss. This knocks out Grimoire and Sally.
When the duo came to, Poppy, Fifi, and Fitz were gathered around them at the lake's edge. They tell them Fitz heard the beetle's hiss and ran up to Flora's room to find Penny standing over them with the crossbow. Upon seeing Fitz she escaped through the window and left the island. Grimoire asks if she took the beetle with her, but Poppy reveals she has it in her hand. When the duo asks what she is going to do with the beetle, she states that she isn't going to give it back to her father but to set it free, thinking it's what Freya would have wanted.
