Storyline

In 1989, the boy Martin Bristol has congenital insensitivity to pain with anhidrosis (CIPA), a rare neural disorder, in which the patient does not feel pain, heat or cold. He is abducted by the deranged serial-killer Graham Sutter (Brett Rickaby) and brought to the Sutter Meat & Poultry, an abandoned meat-packing plant in Minersville, Pennsylvania, where Graham slaughters young women that he kidnaps. Five years later, the stubborn seventeen year-old teenager Allison Miller loses her parents and moves to her uncle Jonathan Miller's house near the decrepit plant. Jonathan, his wife Karen and their little daughter Wendy welcome Allison, but the teenager does not give much attention to her new family. Allison likes to run alone on the road and she passes by the meat-packing plant and then she meets the mechanic William "Billy" and has a crush on him. Jonathan advises Allison to avoid running near the old factory and Billy, who is a problematic teenager. Allison does not listen to her ... Written by Claudio Carvalho, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Quotes

[Sutter approaches Martin as he is playing on his swingset]
Graham Sutter: Hi there. I bought this new bike for my nephew's birthday, but he doesn't like the color. Can you believe that? I was gonna just throw it out when I saw you and I thought, "There's a kid who'd probably love a new bike." Am I right?
[Martin nods]
Graham Sutter: It's right in my truck. Wanna take a look?

Decent Film By Anyone's Standards

The horrific account of 6-year old Martin Bristol (Spencer List), abducted from his backyard swing and forced to witness the brutal crimes of a deranged madman.

Let us get the cast out of the way: Alexandra Daddario, who played Allison, is a rising film starlet, and deserves any praise she gets. And Michael Biehn, who played Jonathan Miller, is a film veteran who does not get nearly enough credit. I also think the awesome wheelchair man needs more credit (and a bigger part).

But, really, we have to single out Spencer List. For much of the film he has a minimal role, but he presents it perfectly -- so much emotion, or sometimes lack thereof, behind a blank face. Is he terrified? Sympathetic? Angry? We never really know from one scene to the next (though if you have seen "Malevolence" you can make some educated guesses).

I recently spoke to Stevan Mena, the director-writer-producer-composer. Aside from asking him some questions about "Brutal Massacre", he filled me in one some plot details on this one that I think were really helpful. For example, it was not clear to me that the girls were not being abducted locally. This makes much more sense. I am tempted to go back and watch the film again, just to better understand the motivations of Graham Sutter.

All in all, a great film. Not the most original, but what film (especially horror) is? For what it is, you have to give Mena the praise he has rightfully earned. As another reviewer remarked, this sets a "new gold standard" for this kind of horror film. Those are bold words, but truly we must compare any new film to this one as more are released.
