The histories of classic popular movies are examined.
A spin-off from the popular "Toys That Made Us" series, "Movie That Made Us" season one contains four hour-long episodes devoted to classic eighties movies - "Ghostbusters", "Dirty Dancing", "Die Hard", and "Home Alone" - scratching the nostalgia itch that made "Toys" so entertaining for adult audiences.
The structure of "Movies" is similar to "Toys": a comprehensive look at the film's origin, its creation (with some rare behind-the-scenes footage), its critical and public reception, and its legacy, with Donald Ian Black narrating in his usual quirky style. There's interviews with actors, producers, directors, scriptwriters, marketing people - basically anyone involved in the movie who's available (the late Patrick Swayze and Alan Rickman are notable absentees, but are represented through archival footage and interviews).
The main difference between "Toys" and "Movies" is the level of the details. While toy lines can span decades, the movie timelines are usually a handful of years, so there's more opportunity to deep dive into each movie and analyse why/how they worked.
A must-watch series for fans of in-depth movie documentaries or the original "Toys" series. Bring on season two.
