The biggest deal that occurred during the Sundance Film Festival wasn’t one that went down at the event itself. New Line Cinema emerged triumphant amid an intense bidding war to grab “Weapons” which will be the next film from “Barbarian” director Zach Cregger. Days later, New Line signed a first-look deal with the whole BoulderLight studio itself.

That’s not to mention noteworthy library additions like “A.I.,” “The Talented Mr. Ripley” and “Almost Famous.

Mafia Mamma and Knives Out star Toni Collette and Odessa Young have signed to co-star in writer and director Nathan Silver’s twisted revenge thriller The Prima Donna.
Collette and Young previously worked together on HBO’s award-winning series The Staircase.
The drama revolves around dysfunctional family dynamics, the dangers of ambition, and the lengths we will go to make our mark on the world.
Set in contemporary Rome, Collette will play a legendary opera diva who is about to step into the role of a lifetime just as her estranged daughter (Young) shows up at her doorstep, right out of rehab.
An aspiring opera singer herself, the daughter summons up the courage to ask to be her mother’s understudy. When her mother callously dismisses the suggestion, she snaps and starts mulling the ultimate revenge, igniting a cut-throat battle of wills.

The Halloween fandom was pretty torn by the third and final installment in David Gordon Green’s Halloween trilogy. Halloween Ends saw Jamie Lee Curtis’ final girl Laurie Strode face down the boogeyman in a no holds barred fight to the death with only one of them walking away. And, although viewers couldn’t seem to agree on whether they loved or hated what is allegedly Curtis’ last appearance as the plagued babysitter, there was one aspect of the movie that brought us all together—the wigs.

Halloween Ends' Laurie Strode wig has found a surprising second life thanks to Lifetime. Laurie Strode is the iconic final girl character who has been played by Jaime Lee Curtis since the very beginning of the franchise in 1978's Halloween. She reprised the role in 1981's Halloween II, 1998's Halloween H20: Twenty Years Later, 2002's Halloween: Resurrection, and the trilogy of David Gordon Green films that kicked off with 2018's Halloween. Halloween Ends, which came to theaters on October 14, 2022, closed out the trilogy and is purportedly the end of the storyline following Strode's longtime battle with masked serial killer Michael Myers.

February is the shortest month of the year but Prime Video is paying that no mind with its jam-packed list of new releases for February 2023.
This really is an uncommonly stuffed month on the Amazon streamer and it all starts with a handful of Amazon Originals. Amazon’s original offerings kick off with the release of Dave Franco-directed romcom Somebody I Used to Know on Feb. 10. That is followed by Carnival Row season 2 – a gritty fantasy crime drama is set in a world of steampunky fairies. The show stars Orlando Bloom and Cara Delevigne and this batch of episodes will be its swan song. Meanwhile The Consultant on Feb. 24 is a dark comedy workplace thriller starring Christoph Waltz.
The biggest hits this month, however, might just be some recent cinema faves. If February is for lovers, Amazon didn’t get the memo as there are quite a few horror movies of note here.

In the age of the streaming wars, not everyone is going to win. Heck, given what happened in 2022, it's easier to imagine that almost everyone is going to lose, what with Netflix losing so much of its value and HBO Max getting caught in Warner Bros. Discovery's extreme cost-cutting measures. Somewhere in the middle of the pack is Peacock, NBCUniversal's big streaming play controlled by Comcast. The company reported its fourth quarter 2022 earnings recently and, safe to say, they are a long (long!) way from Peacock becoming a profitable venture for them.
Per CNBC, losses attributed to the streaming service totaled 2.5 billion in 2022, which was actually in line with expectations put forth by Comcast. That number includes 978 million worth of losses from the fourth quarter alone. What's more -- and what hurts the most -- is that the company said it expects losses to total 3 billion for Peacock

Peacock crossed 20 million paying subscribers in the U.S. in the final quarter of 2022, Comcast reported on Thursday morning, but the landmark number comes at a great cost.
For starters, there’s the 978 million loss in Q4’s adjusted Ebitda. Across all of 2022, Peacock absorbed a 2.5 billion loss.
Yikes, right? You ain’t seen nothin’ yet. On Comcast’s post-earnings conference call, company president Michael Kavanaugh said he Peacock losses to “peak” in 2023 at 3 billion. From there they’ll “steadily improve,” he said, as the NBCUniversal streaming services continues to inch toward breakeven, and hopefully, a profit.
The media analysts at Moffett Nathanson aren’t totally sold. “Peacock’s losses remain enormous, and its path to profitability is just as hard to see as always,” they wrote in a note to investors, on Thursday, questioning whether Peacock can “ever achieve winning scale or attractive long-term margins.” (The emphasis is theirs.

Comcast Corporation topped Wall Street earnings expectations for the fourth quarter of 2022, reporting adjusted earnings per share of 82 cents on revenue of 30.55 billion and net income of 3.02 billion on Thursday.
Peacock, which has surpassed 20 million subscribers, added 5 million net paid subscribers in the United States during the quarter, fueled by live sports and its recent films and originals, Comcast said. It marks the best quarterly result since the streaming service’s launch in 2020.
But Peacock posted a loss of 978 million in the fourth quarter, widening from a loss of 559 million in the prior year period, and revenue of 660 million, up from 335 million in revenue during the same period last year. Full-year Peacock revenue nearly tripled from 778 million to 2.1 billion.
Analysts expected the NBCUniversal parent’s adjusted Eps figure to come in at 77 cents, while revenue was expected to be 30.32 billion, according to a Refinitiv survey.

After pitting a knife-wielding Jennifer Lopez and a submachine gun-armed Jennifer Coolidge against a pack of wedding-crashing pirates in the rom-com/action mashup "Shotgun Wedding" (you can read our review of the film here), Prime Video is slowing things down a little in February. That month will see the release of the second and final season of the streamer's fantasy neo-noir series "Carnival Row," which is dropping nearly three and a half years after the first season launched in August 2019, in case you find yourself wondering (much like /Film's Valerie Ettenhofer), "Wait, so I didn't imagine the show where Orlando Bloom solves crimes and hooks up with pixie Cara Delevingne?" No, no you did not, but hey, at least now it has a proper ending!

David Gordon Green's Halloween reboot trilogy started strong in 2018 with Halloween, a direct sequel to John Carpenter's 1978 horror classic of the same name, but ended weak with Halloween Kills and Halloween Ends, and some creative theories about terror titan Michael Myers could have improved its legacy. As a continuation of the sordid saga of Michael Myers and Laurie Strode, the Halloween reboot trilogy chose to ignore the numerous sequels that began in the '80s (and Rob Zombie's 2007 Halloween remake), intent on making the franchise high-concept and cohesive. Unfortunately, it also shoehorned in a Christine storyline, a new villain, and tampered with the Laurie and Michael sibling connection.
Halloween focuses on Laurie's trauma in the forty years since Michael Myers' massacre on Halloween night, while Halloween Kills acts as a progression of their confrontation after his escape from a maximum security institution. Halloween Ends and its Michael

There's always a villain in a horror film. They supply story conflict, forcing our protagonists to face their own death and rise victorious. Sometimes, villains are cloaked in everyday life as your next-door neighbor, a 9-year-old child, or the family pet. Other times, villains assume the shape of supernatural entities, malevolent forces, or otherworldly beings transported from a different dimension. For every masked serial killer, a vampire ventures out for blood and a ghost causes mayhem in someone's attic.
In 2022, several villains stole the show in otherwise lackluster films and still others stood head and shoulders above their competition. But who are the most powerful villains of the bunch? Below, /Film sifts through the wealth of last year's film releases to rank the eight most powerful baddies, those beings that can rip heads from their victims' bodies and crush bones into dust. “Glass Onion” and “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan” scored major streaming opening weeks.
Both Rian Johnson’s whodunit murder mystery sequel and the Amazon Prime action thriller cracked Nielsen’s streaming Top 10 during the week of December 19-25 with over 1.5 billion viewing minutes within just days after their release.
“Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” earned the top spot on the overall streaming chart with 2.23 billion minutes viewed within the first four days of availability on Netflix following its theatrical release. The movie ranked third on Nielsen’s most streamed movies in a measured week chart behind “Hocus Pocus” (2.73 billion) and “Wonder Woman 1984” (2.25 billion).
By Jan. 10, the film had grown to become Netflix’s fifth most popular film with 253.72 million hours viewed on the site – meaning, it’s very likely the film will continue to stay atop the chart and potentially break its own Nielsen records in the coming weeks.

Skinamarink, the indie horror film that received a wide release after going viral on TikTok, has achieved an impressive box office result at the end of its first week in theaters. The experimental horror film is the feature directorial debut of Canadian filmmaker Kyle Edward Ball. The film, which is presented through a variety of shots that avoid showing the faces of the main characters, follows two siblings who wake up to find that their father is missing and all the exterior doors and windows in their home have vanished, leaving them to their own devices while a mysterious entity lurks in the shadows.
Per Bloody Disgusting, Skinamarink has now earned 1 million in the North American box office. While that number can't exactly compete with the weekend's big blockbusters like Avatar: The Way of Water and M3GAN, Skinmarink only cost 15,000, meaning that this total has already multiplied the film's budget 67 times.

Last month, director David Gordon Green’s sequel to the 1973 classic The Exorcist (watch it Here) – the first in what Green intends to be a trilogy of Exorcist sequels – had to take a longer holiday break than expected when lead actor Leslie Odom Jr. (Hamilton) ran into an unspecified health issue and wasn’t able to continue working. Filming was expected to resume sometime this month, and cinematographer Michael Simmonds has confirmed to Syfy Wire that there isn’t much of the movie left to shoot. In fact, Simmonds said Green’s Exorcist is “90 percent done”.
Green previously directed a trilogy of Halloween sequels, and Simmonds was the cinematographer on those films as well. Simmonds said that the approach being taken to the new Exorcist movie is “completely different than Halloween. It’s certainly more suspenseful and claustrophobic and true to the original material. Kyle Richards from The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills is defending The Voice coach Gwen Stefani for identifying as Japanese. In a recent interview, Gwen denied accusations of cultural appropriation. Instead, the singer claimed her experiences with and appreciation for the culture meant she was Japanese. The horror genre is already off to a scary good start in 2023 with Blumhouse and Universal’s M3GAN slaying the dreaded January curse. The AI killer doll has been receiving rave reviews from both critics and horror fanatics alike while absolutely blowing up the box office in its opening weekend. M3GAN won’t stop terrifying audiences anytime soon as the film has already made 34.2 million internationally, and 90 million globally, in just the first two weeks of its release. This currently has M3GAN going toe to toe with other genre hits like Smile, Halloween Ends, The Black Phone, Invisible Man, and Happy Death Day during that same time frame.

The Blumhouse Halloween timeline featured one specific injury that only proved fatal to Michael Myers himself. 1978's Halloween is the film that launched a million slasher imitators. The various sequels shunned the relatively bloodless nature of John Carpenter's original in favor of keeping up with rival franchises like Friday The 13th. Thus, supernatural boogeyman Michael Myers took to dispatching victims in a variety of creative ways, including drowning a nurse in boiling water (Halloween 2) or using farming implements (Halloween 5).
Arguably the most brutal iteration of Michael was seen in Blumhouse's Halloween legacy sequels. 2021's Halloween Kills contained the largest body count of the entire series, where The Shape massacred his way through Haddonfield as the town rallied to stop him. 2022's Halloween Ends is the rare slasher sequel that actually offered closure on a given storyline, and it's doubtful the next film will follow on from its events. John Carpenter reveals the absurd notes he received from the studio for Halloween and Big Trouble In Little China. Carpenter kicked off his run as an iconic horror director with 1978’s Halloween, the movie that first introduced audiences to classic horror villain Michael Myers. But Carpenter was always much more than a horror director, as he proved when he unleashed 1986’s Big Trouble In Little China, a comic action-adventure movie that flopped in its day but went on to be a cult classic.
But as much as Carpenter is known for his cinematic output, the director is almost equally famed for being one of the great curmudgeons in all of Hollywood. And Carpenter’s cranky side was indeed on full display during a recent interview with Variety, in which he looked back on his whole career as a maker of movies both big and small. At one point, the conversation turned to studio notes,

Universal and Blumhouse’s latest hit horror movie M3GAN has exceeded expectations at the January box office, which is continuing an important trend for successful horror releases. M3GAN’s campy horror-comedy premise launched numerous viral memes on social media when its first trailer dropped in October, gaining significant anticipation for the film’s wide release in January 2023. The critically-acclaimed PG-13 horror movie stars Allison Williams (Get Out) and Violet McGraw (The Haunting of Hill House), with the former’s character launching a new high-tech doll called M3GAN, who turns out to be a terrifying and hostile menace to anyone who stands between her and her human companion, Cady.
In addition to being the first major horror release of 2023, M3GAN is one of the biggest theatrical releases since James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water on December 16, which quickly surpassed Top Gun: Maverick as the highest-grossing film of 2022. While M

M3GAN released in theaters January 6, but when will it be coming to streaming? M3GAN has become an internet sensation — the film has been meme'd multiple times and consists of a viral hallway dance sequence that never gets old to watch. Directed by Gerard Johnstone from a screenplay by Akela Cooper (who came up with the story alongside James Wan), M3GAN is already a big box office hit, and its arrival to streaming bodes well.
The window of time between a movie’s theatrical release and its premiere on a streaming platform has been shortened over the last couple of years, with the pandemic playing a big role in the way Hollywood operates. January has typically not been a strong month for movies (at least not in quality), but M3GAN received a positive critical reception, and it overperformed at the box office, raking in 30.2 million domestically in its opening weekend,

The Halloween franchise has featured some iconic battles between Laurie Strode and Michael Myers. Even though there have been various retcons and remakes throughout the franchise, its hero and villain have always remained consistent. First appearing on-screen together in 1978, the feud between Laurie and Michael has spanned over four decades before coming to an apparent close in 2022's Halloween Ends.
The Halloween franchise has set itself apart from other famous slashers through Laurie and Michael's relationship. Except for the Scream franchise, other iconic horror villains have rarely had to face their initial final girl on numerous occasions. Laurie has faced Michael Myers during different points of her life in various timelines, typically leading to a different outcome each time.

Part of why the Halloween franchise is so loved is because of how it shifted audiences' perceptions of female protagonists.

2022 was a huge year for horror films, with the return of big name franchises like Scream, Halloween Ends, and Hellraiser, plus surprise hits that were on no one’s radar such as Barbarian and Smile. It was also a big year for wrestling. WWE took a creative upturn with the retirement of Vince McMahon, and their competition, Aew, continued to impress with their matches and storylines.

Exclusive: James Wan has been labeled by fans for being responsible for killer doll movies, specifically his Conjuring franchise spinoff, Annabelle.
“It’s funny, I really hadn’t done that yet,” says the horror auteur. And that was his prime reason to create M3GAN with screenwriter Akela Cooper.
“In my previous doll movies — they don’t kill anyone. Annabelle never gets up and walks around. Everyone says I’m the killer doll guy. So I said, I’m going to make a killer doll movie for a brand new generation. Today’s kids didn’t grow up with Chucky like we did,” continues Wan who produced the PG-13 film and wrote the story with Cooper on script.

M3GAN has already broken quite a few box office records in its opening weekend. The film, which opened in theaters this past Friday, is the latest horror outing from Blumhouse, reteaming Malignant duo James Wan and Akela Cooper as producer and screenwriter respectively, with Housebound director Gerard Johnstone at the helm. The film follows a young robotics engineer (Alison Williams) who develops an AI-driven doll named M3GAN to be a companion for her orphaned niece (Violet McGraw), only to realize that the android's directive to protect the girl at all costs includes murdering anyone who she perceives to be a potential threat.
Per Deadline, M3GAN's box office run is off to a great start in its opening weekend, with a 3-day projected total of 30.2 million in the domestic box office, absolutely blowing away expectations. This means that the film has accomplished a cavalcade of box office records, including nabbing

The novelization for Halloween Ends has provided a glimpse into other characters infected by Michael Myers' evil. Halloween Ends faced a mass backlash following its release due to its focus being on a new killer, Corey Cunningham. In the film, Corey is ostracized by Haddonfield after a young boy he is babysitting tragically dies, leading the town to label Corey as the new boogeyman. Eventually, Corey crosses paths with Michael Myers, who infects Corey with his evil, leading Corey to become the boogeyman Haddonfield painted him out to be.
Corey Cunningham's role as Michael's apprentice garnered a lot of criticism for Halloween Ends. For many viewers, this plot line didn't make much sense and misunderstands what was known about Michael Myers. However, the Halloween Ends novelization, written by Paul Brad Logan, explains Michael's ability to infect others with his evil. In 1982, Dr. Loomis tells Laurie that a patient at Smith's Grove,

After premiering on Dec. 22, “The Best Man: The Final Chapters” became Peacock’s first original project to make it onto Nielsen’s Top 10 streaming rankings.
According to data provided to NBCU by Nielsen and exclusively obtained by Variety, “The Best Man: The Final Chapters” is ranked in the No. 5 position in an early version of Nielsen’s Top 10 Streaming Originals chart for the Dec. 19-25 viewing period, during which it was available for four days. (Exact information about minutes watched during this period is not yet available.)
As such, this also marks the young NBCU-owned streamer’s biggest ever series debut. That title was previously held by “Bel-Air,” Peacock’s dramatic reimagining of “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.”

The year is finally at an end. Despite all the breathless prophesying and doomsdaying, the industry is in more or less the same place it started in January. Marvel has not, and probably never will completely wrestle the production and exhibition of non IP-films about regular human beings into the ground, adults are slowly but surely returning to theaters to see film artists play with original ideas, and there still are no movie stars.
Film culture is as dynamic and exciting as ever. I had the good fortune to attend both the Cannes and Toronto International Film Festivals this year, which means I was exposed to a far broader range of international cinema than what my trusty combination of small indie theaters, VOD services like Mubi and Kanopy, and effedupmovies.com can provide. That also means many of those films, no matter how wonderful, won't make the cut, as they didn't secure a 2022 release.

A brand-new clip from the upcoming Blumhouse AI horror M3GAN depicts the titular character mercilessly ripping off the ear of Brandon, a young boy who wasn't minding his manners. The Gerard Johnstone-directed sci-fi horror tells the story of an orphaned girl, Cady, who winds up under the care of her aunt, Gemma, played by Get Out's Allison Williams. Having to simultaneously deal with the stress of inheriting an orphaned eight-year-old and a high-pressure job, Gemma enlists the help of the AI prototype doll known as M3GAN to alleviate the workload, but the doll begins to take a life of its own, resulting in dire consequences.
The James Wan-produced thriller hits screens January 13, making it the first Blumhouse release of the year. Rotten Tomatoes recently debuted a horrifying clip that shows the killer doll brutally ripping Brandon's ear off. With a PG-13 rating on release, there is limited gore,

Humanity is going to hell in a handbasket. At least, that seems to be the rearview consensus on 2022: a year that saw some things get better, a lot of things get worse, and the consequential uncertainty further taking over politics and pop culture.
Anyone reading this list knows horror movies mean some kind of catharsis. But as worldwide trends get more dreadful year over year, the thematic link between “our trying times” and the satisfaction we get from nightmares playing out onscreen has become stronger and more apparent. Now, perhaps more than ever before, scary movie fans can acutely consider why some new terrors captivate and excite, while others don’t or can’t.
Take last year’s inexplicable cannibalism trend: “Bones and All,” “Fresh,” “Resurrection,” all great movies that make our list. But why did consuming flesh consume our interest? And why did that subject matter so often intersect with sex?

Quentin Tarantino is in agreement with Halloween fans about the one key twist ruining the franchise. The original Halloween featured an incredibly simple premise, and its shock success not only created a franchise but gave the slasher genre a blueprint. Despite even creator John Carpenter feeling there was no story left after the original, 2022's Halloween Ends became the 13th entry in the franchise to date. While Tarantino hasn't directed a slasher movie (yet), he has an intriguing link to the Halloween movie franchise.
Early in his career, he was briefly considered by Miramax to write and direct Halloween 6. According to an interview with Consequence Of Sound in 2019, his take would have involved explaining who Halloween 5's mysterious Man in Black was, and it would have followed him and Michael Myers leaving a trail of bodies along Route 66. Tarantino ultimately departed the sequel with the resulting Halloween: The Curse Of

Warning: Spoilers Below For Halloween EndsInstead of being another Halloween timeline reboot, all the next entry really has to do is bring back Michael Myers and start fresh. The continuity of the Halloween saga is notoriously tangled due to being ripped up and restarted so many times. Halloween 2018 took the bold approach of throwing out everything bar the original, which certainly paid off. With Halloween Ends, the Blumhouse chapter has drawn to a close, but followers of the saga are already wondering what the next step will be. Ends saw Michael Myers die in a Very conclusive manner, so the next outing is unlikely to pick up from that timeline.

2022 was a year of recovery for the box office. While the astounding success of Top Gun: Maverick and Avatar: The Way of Water proved that audiences would turn out for “event cinema,” many independent films and mid-budget titles underperformed as audiences turned to streaming. There was no such thing as a “sure thing” at the box office, as the changing theatrical window and dominance of franchises made it harder for original films to stand out. This year proved that even seemingly “safe” franchise vehicles could underperform thanks to dismal reviews with Lightyear, Halloween Ends, and Morbius.

2022 was an incredible year for horror films from across the world that deserve just as much attention as any domestic genre hit.

A lot of moments that didn’t make it into the theatrical cut of director David Gordon Green’s Halloween Ends were used to promote the film, with one of the most prominent examples being images that showed an extended version of the attack on the character Joan, Corey’s mom, who was played by Joanne Baron. Now that Halloween Ends is available on both digital and physical media, we decided to share the extended scene clip that shows the full attack on Joan.

Fans of the Shudder series The Last Drive-In with Joe Bob Briggs were happy to see Diana Prince, also known as Darcy the Mail Girl, show up in director David Gordon Green’s Halloween Ends (read our review Here and discuss whether or not you think the movie is underrated Here) as the radio receptionist Susan – but were also disappointed that her death scene didn’t make it into the final cut of the film. We only see the aftermath. Prince initially thought the deleted death scene would end up on the physical media release of the film… but now that she has received confirmation that it’s not on there, she shared some footage that gives a behind-the-scenes look at the excised murder.

Where there’s horror, there’s death, and 2022 has been a tremendous year for horror. The genre is thriving, as evidenced by the robust offerings of surprise sequels, massive franchise returns, and original stories on every level, indie and otherwise. That means a slew of ingenious and highly creative onscreen kills that made us groan, cringe, cheer, and even cry.

2022 was one of the best years the horror genre has seen in a very long time. This year saw the return of many beloved franchises, new slasher darlings, and major box office success stories. However, one of the most divisive films to come out of this genre in 2022 was Halloween Ends. This conclusion to Michael Myers and Laurie Strode’s saga had the widest range of opinions a film has seen since Star Wars: The Last Jedi. It’s been a couple of months now and, with the dust finally settling on Michael’s coffin, Halloween Ends is making its way to Blu-ray this week. In preparation for the release, Universal has dropped a new behind-the-scenes look at the film highlighting Jamie Lee Curtis’ legacy as Laurie Strode.

We’re in the sequel era, and as such, 2022 has delivered a bevy of continuing installments of fan-favorite franchises. In this year alone, we saw the release of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Top Gun: Maverick, Halloween Ends, Jurassic World Dominion, and many, many more. Some of them serve as the final chapter of a franchise trilogy; some are direct continuations of a single film. There are even a few that serve as a sequel reboot to long-running IPs looking to make a return. But this doesn’t exclude television, as many series debuts also served as sequels, such as Willow, Dexter: New Blood, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and The Santa Clauses, just to name a few. As we look back on the year in entertainment and complete our 2022 round-ups, we’re left wondering which of these offerings reign supreme. There are over 20 sequels out in the wild this year,

Well Schmoes, as 2022 finally draws to a close we reflect on a year unlike any other in our lifetimes. We finally got back to a pretty normal theatrical schedule from the studios, but streaming still had a lot t offer as well. If there is one thing for sure, there are always movies that are highly overrated and underrated by critics and fans alike. As the UnPopular Opinion Guy, I felt it was only fitting to issue my list of the movies I felt that the masses got wrong. Some of these may shock you and some may just piss you off, but these are my honest-to-goodness perspective of the movies of 2022. If you disagree with any of the choices, please voice your own opinion in the comments below. After all, the only opinion that really matters is yours, and I am just here to share mine.
