Set on the night of February 25, 1964, "One Night in Miami" follows a young, brash Cassius Clay as he emerges from the Miami Beach Convention Center the new Heavyweight Boxing Champion of the World. Against all odds, he defeated Sonny Liston and shocked the sports world. While crowds of people swarm Miami Beach to celebrate the match, Clay - unable to stay on the island because of Jim Crow-era segregation laws - spends the evening at the Hampton House Motel in Miami's African American Overtown neighborhood celebrating with three of his closest friends: Malcolm X, Sam Cooke, and Jim Brown. One of a kind

These men were icons, unique strong and Black. But their similarities and differences make for an interesting study of compare-and-contrast. HOWEVER I had to cut this short because I found the role of Malcolm X was miscast in a way that spiritual men are commonly misunderstood. Malcolm was a street hustler before he became a spiritual leader. His force of character was not dimmed by his spiritual side, but this role makes him seem embarrassed to be who he is. He was so streetwise and gangster - there is no way he'd be apologizing about ice cream. The other roles were cast with much better actors. This misstep gives another meaning to "what might have been" - in Miami, and also in this film.
