While the last several episodes of the show has seen strong character development for Askeladd who is now shown to be an incredibly complex character, Thorfinn as a result has been struggling for a bit of that development in the past few episodes.
This episode rectifies that and starts slowly, but surely making Thorfinn a more likeable lead (instead of just a badass murder-child) while also greatly developing Canute's (and, to an extent, Ragnar) character.
