Following one of her trademark barn-burning sermons, Evangelical preacher Sister Alice (Tatiana Maslany) offers the Dodsons the church's full moral and financial support - much to her mother Birdy's (Lili Taylor) dismay. During a routine domestic intervention, beat cop Paul Drake (Chris Chalk) is re-routed to a gruesome crime scene, where he follows a confounding trail of evidence. Mason (Matthew Rhys) is left incensed by a jaw-dropping admission from Baggerly (Robert Patrick) and, after pressing Emily Dodson (Gayle Rankin) on her husband's alibi, finds himself confronted by an outraged Della Street (Juliet Rylance). Detectives Holcomb (Eric Lange) and Ennis (Andrew Howard) use Drake's (Chris Chalk) findings to their own advantage. Written by HBO

Complete departure from Erle Stanley Gardner
22 July 2020 | by sawznhamrs-1See all my reviews

Several viewers of the first episode express dismay that the series begins completely foreign to the original author and Perry Mason series and I strongly agree with them. Use of foul language for me always detracts from a great script, the plot, and even great costuming and set. HBO seems to believe and promote the notion that reaching for the lowest language and sexual situations make for the most realistic approach to entertainment. But reality is that entertainment from the earliest times in Hollywood strongly prohibitied such language and open sexuality. It continues even to this day in 2020. Great series are made without foul language or sexual expression. One reviewer point out that gratuitous sex is wasted since pornography is widely available on the internet and I agree. Two such series come to mind--Without a Trace and The Good Wife. Many others were excellent entertainment. I signed up for HBO strictly to see this new Perry Mason series, but after viewing the first two episodes I am seriously thinking of cancelling. I am by no means a prude or intolerant of some gritty expression, but it has just not been part of my world. Finding good entertainment is crucial during this pandemic and this series may not be it. I'll see what else HBO has to offer before I cancel.
