How did they make a storm movie this dull

Like others, I was expecting it to be a newer Twister, but they missed the mark. It was just dull and meandering around. Lots of inconsistencies throughout and barely showing any action.

Like Twister it centered around a parent who had been killed in a storm and was about storm chasing and using a gadget that would do something to help early storm detection (although they never really explain what the heck it does).

That is where the similarities end, the rest of a kid trying to discover more about his dad and doing so by being fairly annoying. There are much better storm movies out there including Into the Storm or even the Hurricane Heist which isn't great, but more entertaining.

It has some moments, but is far from a perfect film

Disclosing up front, I've been storm chasing for about 10 years, so this is my perspective.

The film is not perfect by any stretch. It has some actual, authentic storm footage, but it's mixed in with low quality effects and blurry scenes. Many shots are filmed in wide angle and the perspective is all distorted. (Sorry, the photographer in me was cringing)

I digress. The plot had moments of suspense and drama, but it was way too jumpy. Plenty of Easter eggs for storm chasers, but a lot of that will go over the head of the casual viewer.

It would have been nice if they took a little bit of time of clearly outline what a "supercell" actually is. Sure, I know what one is, but it would help the viewer understand better. You see lots of radar clips, but with little to no explanation at all. Dramatic music is also thrown in all over, but it doesn't always fit with the flow of the movie.

Unfortunately, there were also many errors, in terms of meteorology, storm evolution/continuity and with geography. At one point, there are interstate signs visible from the wrong state. Unless you're a storm chaser or travel often across the Plains, it's really hard to follow where they are and what they are talking about much of the time.

Overall, it seems best watched in a group. Go into it accepting that it's not a perfect cinematic masterpiece. It's dramatized for Hollywood. If you can look past some of the flaws, you will probably enjoy it. If you're expecting an award winning film with epic tornado footage, then you'll be disappointed.

I give it a 5/10, trying to not let the storm chaser in me skew my perspective.

Don't waste your time

With a great cast I was expecting so much more. Title should of been dysfunctional family that try's not to chase storms. Watched the entire movie hoping it would get better, but alas no. The back ground music didn't match what was happening it made it lead into something great was going to happen but nothing. You never get to see any great action scenes everything just leads up to something but falls flat. At one stage I thought the son was a teenager with well below average intelligence as he did some enormously stupid things and his behaviour was like that of a child. Sorry to say but 4 star was very generous and do not recommend this movie at all.

A storm movie without much force...

Well, I have to say that I was expecting a tad more from this 2023 disaster movie titled "Supercell", especially since it was a brand new movie and having a cast ensemble with some fairly established names on it.

All I knew about "Supercell", when I sat down to watch it was that it was about what the title of movie indicates. So I figured that chances were that it would be a good movie at least. So of course I opted to watch what director Herbert James Winterstern had to offer.

Writers and Anna Elizabeth James and Herbert James Winterstern delivered a watchable enough script for the movie. However, I have to say that it was a fairly generic plot, and in terms of excitement and thrills, then "Supercell" just didn't have what it took. It might have huffed and puffed, but it was not with much force.

And I am rather surprised at how generic and nondescript "Supercell" turned out to be, especially with the likes of Skeet Ulrich, Alec Baldwin and Anne Heche on the cast list. The acting performances in the movie were fair enough, but the character gallery was somewhat monotonous, and I didn't really care if something were to befell the characters or not.

Visually then "Supercell" was okay. The special effects were bland actually, and I wasn't impressed.

If you enjoy movies about tornadoes, then the 1996 movie "Twister" is still the best choice.

My rating of "Supercell" lands on a four out of ten stars.

Twister on a budget

Twister extra light

If after seeing the poster and reading the synopsis you thought that this was probably a (very) low budget version of Twister, you were right. It's sufficient if you must kill some time and there's nothing else at hand, but you certainly won't choose it for a re-watch any time soon. The story is thinner than thin, the acting is mediocre if I want to be generous, the special effects are hardly there. The script is not annoyingly bad, mostly because it's a soulless copy of other similar movies. Not much to remember, it's a movie as light as a feather. One dimensional characters do exactly what you expect them to do, and then the movie ends.

Meh

There's not really much to it but high school melodrama.

Most of the time I can't hear what the kid's saying and the rest of the time it's obnoxious characters yelling at each other while making stupid decisions and pointless statements.

None of the characters are remotely likable and they all drift from scene to scene without any momentum or clear plot development.

Some of the green screen effects are very poor, and in one particular scene you can see a bank of star shaped LED light strips which are supposed to be lightning and it's reflecting off every object in the scene to the point of distraction.

It's amateurish through and through.

Give it a miss, go watch some 4k Tornado videos on YouTube.

Boring, lazy and uninteresting

This movie tries to portray itself with mystique and fantasy, but winds up just being boring and unrealistic.

Going into this movie I had no idea who was even in it, but soon into it I then realize the problematic it was to an already a slow-moving drag of a movie.

The script was really lame but worse, the acting was amateurish.

Anne Heche's acting in this movie was awful and failed to deliver lines clearly or believably. Her presence in this movie was very distracting.

Alec Baldwin equally did a pretty substandard job in being believable, I simply did not get the Indiana Jones type of persona he was trying to deliver, it did not fit the overall flavor of this movie and his performance detracted from the theme of the flick.

The movie score on the other hand, was pretty good, it seemed to fit an ET or Gremlins sort of feel, its kind of felt like they tried to build a movie around the music, but unfortunately the movie doesnt hold up to the soundtrack. Slow moving snoozer.

This is a pretty good watch for disaster movie fans.

Here's The 4K Lowedown on "Supercell" (PG-13 - 2023 - Blu) Genre: Thriller/Disaster

My Score: 6.6 Cast=7 Acting=5 Plot=7 Ending=7 Story=7 Intense=7 Pace=6 Suspense=7 Disaster=8 Epic=5

A teenage boy runs away to follow his fathers footsteps as a legendary storm chaser despite his mother's wishes.

"Rule number one...always make sure you got at least a half a tank of gas." This is a low rent version of Twister, but they showed real tornado footage from a storm chaser and put it on a green screen. I loved the homage to Bill Paxton in the easter eggs and there were a couple good scenes, but you have to be a sucker for disaster movies to make this worth a watch. I am that sucker...I enjoyed the movie. RIP Anne Heche.

Stick with Twister

It's so bad. So, so bad. I had lots of hope for this movie but spent the entire time wanting it to hurry up and be over. I am very interested in tornadoes so was really excited for Supercell but Jesus Christ, I was bored to tears, so I can only imagine how it was for people who aren't that interested in tornadoes. The acting was AWFUL, I actually cringed a few times it was so bad. The plot is boring and not at all original, and not a single character was likeable. I really am so disappointed as this was one of the films I was really looking forward to. I guess I'll just keep rewatching Twister for my storm-chasing fix.

Glad I don't follow reviews for movies!!!

I just watched this and thought it was a good movie. I put it in my queue because I thought it was a related story or sequel to the classic Twister, it wasn't but did pay homage a little. Sure I t was a movie about tornadoes but I wouldn't say that was the main story. There was underlying story of a kid trying to know his father that passed when he was a child. The 80's Spielberg-ish background music helped keep me focused and gave the movie this childhood dreamy feel, kind of like ET or Goonies. Overall it was a good movie that didn't let me down. Again, I'm glad that I do t follow reviews when it comes to movies or TV shows.

Retro

Almost everything about this movie reminded me of adventure movies from the late 70s to early 90s:

  • A classical score as if it was E. T.

  • Cinematography as if it was Close Encounters of the Third Kind

  • Production design as if it was Back To the Future

  • Even the characters and the dialogs

It was like a magical nostalgic trip. And while the superficial topic was not really important to me personally, they used it as a vehicle to provide all the above mentioned qualities and to distract from the underlying light family drama.

Will I watch it again? Most probably not because there are many other productions to watch instead, and I would rather watch the original movies from the 80s again. (Hence no 8 points.)

Do I regret it to have seen it? No because I enjoyed the relaxing mood it got me into. (Hence at at least 6 points.)

Would I recommend it to others? Yes if I knew that the person could relate to the nostalgia, I tried to describe in this review. (Hence 7 points.)

But I would not recommend it to people who expect a tornado disaster movie.

Very Boring and Cheap

They seemed to have a very tight budget, and considering this film was created in 2023, it looks like it came out way before then. For a film about tornadoes, there was hardly any footage of tornadoes at all, most of the film was based around an extremely boring storyline. If there was any footage of weather events, it was shoddily placed into the background using greenscreen, making the appearance extremely cheap. This film would have no significant impact on anyone, even people who are very interested in tonadoes (Like myself). I personally believe it is not worth watching, save your time for another film.

Good Background Images

The only positive in this movie is that they used real storm footage in the background. The movie itself is excruciatingly boring. And the Star Wars themed music playing louder than anything during every scene became an extreme nuisance. The actual storm footage is the saving grace but you'd still be better off finding storm chase videos on YouTube. You can skip this movie, you really are not missing anything unless you're wanting to listen to out of place music non-stop.

Acting: honestly I got too distracted watching videos on my phone because the film was so boring. I didn't pay enough attention to grade the acting.

Plot: pretty stupid honestly. Son follows in dad's footsteps as a storm chaser, meanwhile mom is chasing him down. You toss back and forth between son and mom and the same music never stops.

Storm scenes: they build up to a point that it seems a good scene is about to come. Just as the storm arrives it switches scenes to another character. You never see direct storm footage.

damn.

I gave this 'movie' 1 star......because i couldn't give it a minus 10. Where does one even begin??? Script...seems made up as they went along. No 'direction'...but the 'actors' didn't really need direction, because this story is as old as cinema itself,it's has been done so many times.a kid trying to stand in his daddy's shoes,i'm smarted than my daddy...and the tired, old veteran,& his remarks...'did somebody change the kids diaper'? So he has to prove himself over,& over, see? Even you've seen this weak a$$ crap over,& over.it tries to be a Twister 2,& it just don't work.even the music sucks. This was AWFUL!!!!

I'm giving this 5 for Anne Heche RIP

This was Anne Heche's last film before her tragic death in a car accident, so what a great pity for her it couldn't have been better.

Alec Baldwin plays Alec Baldwin, what happened to him - he used to be such a Leading Man, think Hunt for Red October and even 3rd Rock from the Sun and ... this. I guess he needs to feed all those kids that he can't seem to stop producing. Someone should tell him about birth control.

However, the guy who played the kid was the absolute worst thing about this movie. Supposedly highly intelligent, he just looked and acted like a dumb idiot all the way through. Such bad casting.

I liked Skeet Ulrich though even though I hardly recognised him.

the worst so far, maybe ever.

One of the worst movies ever. I don't believe that such a movie can be still be produced nowadays. The director, the story, the actors even the trees are all so dull.

The grass is not tossing and yet a tornado is around. The trees are as if in a picture, and may they were so.

What were they thinking of?

Damiel Diemer's performance is ice-cold. Worse than sh... I suggest negative stars to be implemented for such movies. Then this will deserve a negative 5 stars for sure.

I regret the time wasted in watching it. It was just BAD There were many movies that were more enjoyable than this piece of...

Impotent, Boring, Pretentious, and Full of Itself.

Rarely have I ever encountered a movie as obnoxious as "Supercell", a stupid movie with a fittingly stupid title.

The beginning was very promising, with a fairly atmospheric and low-key tone, setting the characters and the tragedy of the main character's loss. It wasn't then I didn't know that the whole movie is like this. A series of people telling the protagonist was a great man his father was, and what a loss for the tornado chasing community his death was.

A constant and (inevitably) pointless series of people talking in rooms and cars, where the insisting and obnoxious music tries to make you think what you're seeing is inspiring or exciting, when neither emotion is really present.

Low budget aside, this movie should've been shelved in the editing room to never be released, and absolute waste of time and effort that could've stayed away from people's eyeballs.

In loving memory of Anne Heche.

The cast of Supercell includes Jordan Kristine Seamón aHarper, William's potential love interest who sees his potential and encourages him, but also worries about his safety. She understands that he's a free spirit who needs to chase after tornadoes if that's what he wants to do. Harper quickly bonds with Dr. Quinn (Anne Heche, may she rest in peace), further adding to the already complicated relationships between the characters. I love these disaster movies and this one is no different. Diemer's performance is watchable. However, the film's weather effects are the one redeeming quality. The tornadoes, dark clouds, lightning, and debris all look incredibly realistic, leading me to believe that they might have used real footage. The effects are nearly flawless.

Alec Baldwin (Zane) and Anne Heche shine in their respective roles, marking themselves as the professionals on set. Their brief appearances give us something extra Overall, Supercell is a disaster movie that I'm glad I watched, if only for the impressive weather effects. And in loving memory of Anne Heche (Dr. Quinn).

Not a Storm Chaser Movie

Do not waste your time. This isn't some storm chaser action movie about tornados. It's a boring coming-of-age drama about a kid who's dad was a storm chaser. That's it. There's zero action and a total of three storm scenes: two of which is about 20 seconds long and unexciting.

There were some interesting dialogs regarding meteorology, but nowhere near enough to really help with the movie.

The majority of the movie is just chasing this teen kid around who ran away from his mom and seemingly can't pay attention to his surroundings

There's also some magical scientific "if only you had finished your work you would saves countless lives" device involved as well. They never really explain what it is or what it can potentially do, other than "finding the pulse of the storm". It's never expanded on despite being an initial focus of the protagonist, and is never mentioned in the conclusion.

The movie just sort of... ends.

Many good ingredients, but a mediocre result

All the actors range from decent to great. The plot is really simple, nothing too deep or unexpected. The soundtrack was actually amazing, possibly the best thing about the whole movie - the composer goes above and beyond what this move deserves! I'm keeping an eye on Corey Wallace, he's going to do great things I reckon.

I was constantly annoyed by the awful compositing work, as they tried to add in dramatic skies and storms to many shots, and failed to do good edge-masking or color correction. I work with video myself, so I know it can't have been easy to deliver this any better on this budget. I suspect the blame lies with the director and cinematographer, who thought they knew what they were doing, that they could pull this off without bluescreens, better lighting and a VFX expert on set.

Yes it was worth watching, but the action only gets intense for a few short minutes in total. It's unavoidable that this movie will be compared to "Twister" and it just comes nowhere near the same caliber of drama and intensity.

Things get worse over time

This is a meal-in-a-box recipe: Twister 2.0. (There is even an early direct reference to Bill Paxton in the early part of the movie.) I was hoping for stunning special effects and they were good, but not great. All of the obligatory elements-loss, fear, overcoming, romance-as if a high school film club project. It's hard to believe how far we haven't come in drama. Even Alec plays the typical hot-shot, hot-head, egoist role, and again to his own demise. This is a movie that belongs in the "included with your subscription" movies, not your hard-earned money. Avoid the fare: you already saw this in the late-90s.
