The Dark Knight Returns to Limited IMAX Theaters Next Month

The Dark Knight Returns to Limited IMAX Theaters Next Month
The Dark Knight is celebrating its 10th anniversary in style. Director Christopher Nolan's comic book movie masterpiece turns 10-years-old today and, to honor the occasion, Warner Bros. is going to re-release it in IMAX next month. That, in itself, is excellent and very exciting news for fans, but there's a big catch. Unfortunately, the movie is only returning to four screens in four different theaters across the U.S. and Canada. Sorry, everyone else.

These 10th anniversary screenings will kick off for a one-week, limited engagement on Friday, August 24. The Dark Knight will be screened in IMAX at AMC Universal Citywalk Imax, Universal City, AMC Lincoln Square Imax, New York, AMC Metreon Imax, San Francisco, Ontario Place Cinesphere Imax, Toronto. So if you don't live in Los Angeles, New York City, San Francisco or Toronto, or can't easily travel to one of those locations, you may, unfortunately, be out of luck on this one.

‘The Dark Knight’ Turns 10: How Christopher Nolan Launched an Epic Battle to Make Imax Blockbusters

‘The Dark Knight’ Turns 10: How Christopher Nolan Launched an Epic Battle to Make Imax Blockbusters
The Dark Knight” was a certified game changer when it exploded onto screens 10 years ago: It made Hollywood take comic-book adaptations seriously, heralded Christopher Nolan as one of Hollywood’s most bankable directors, and even sparked a change in the Oscar’s best picture nominations — but the movie’s biggest talking point was its use of Imax, the first time the format had ever been used on a feature film.

With Warner Bros. re-releasing the movie on Imax screens to mark the 10-year-anniversary, the time is ripe to explore the significance of Nolan’s achievement with the format, and the battle to keep this unique big-screen cinematographic approach in use over the years.

The format, which utilizes 70mm film with a greater amount of perforations, had been limited to documentaries for its first few decades until features began to be formatted to be shown on the gargantuan Imax screens, which

‘The Dark Knight’ Set for 10th Anniversary IMAX Re-release (Exclusive)
Warner Bros. Pictures has set Christopher Nolan’s 2008 superhero sequel “The Dark Knight” for a re-release in four select IMAX theaters to celebrate the film’s 10th anniversary, Variety has learned.

Venues in Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco and Toronto will host the film for a limited one-week engagement beginning Friday, Aug. 24.

Nolan and Oscar-winning cinematographer Wally Pfister pioneered the use of IMAX 70mm photography in feature filmmaking on the production, marking “The Dark Knight” as the first major feature to utilize Imax cameras. Nolan had previously tested the possibilities of the format’s massive scale and increased resolution with an Imax digital remastering of “Batman Begins.”

In the years since, movies such as “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen,” “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol,” “Star Trek Into Darkness” and “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” have followed suit, not to mention Nolan’s own “The Dark Knight Rises,” “Interstellar” and “Dunkirk.

Damon Lindelof’s “Watchmen” pilot at HBO has set a number of actors in key roles, Variety has learned.

Regina King, Don Johnson, Tim Blake Nelson, Louis Gossett Jr., Adelaide Clemens, and Andrew Howard will all appear in the series, with King in the lead role. King previously appeared on “The Leftovers,” the HBO drama series co-created by Lindelof and Tom Perrotta, based on Perrotta’s novel of the same name.

The exact details of their characters are being kept under wraps. Lindelof on Tuesday posted a letter to fans in which he laid out his vision for the series, which he said will not be a re-telling of the story from the original graphic novel, but rather a new story in the same world with new characters set in the present day.

“Some of the characters will be unknown,” he said. “New faces. New masks to cover them. We

The Top 25 Box Office Blockbusters of the 21st Century

The Top 25 Box Office Blockbusters of the 21st Century
No subjective “best” list here, this one is based on stats. As the 21st century turns 16, we’ve got the 25 biggest-grossing domestic blockbusters to date.

Check the stunning list below, which is unlike any previous period in movie business history. (We’re using adjusted totals to account for changing ticket prices. Box Office Mojo’s top 200 all-time adjusted list is here.) Here’s what we learned by doing the numbers:

The 21st Century Has Delivered Many of the Biggest Hits in History

25 of the 100 all-time biggest-grossing films have come from the first 16 years of this century. 1984 to 2000, the era that perfected the modern blockbuster and mass release of movies, brought 17. So the 21st century has been an era of major hits.

But oddly, the first current-century films on the all-time-grossers list places #11: “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” And “Avatar” is #14. (This is where adjusting becomes essential — unadjusted, the ten
