This might be appealing to teenage girls... at best. And I love Terry Brooks. Pass on it.
11 March 2016 | by See all my reviews

I've been a fan of Terry Brooks since the mid 1980's and am another of the host of folks that have read all of his books (from the Shannara / Word-Void and the Magic Kingdom universes). I like his writing style and the stories are compelling. And yes, Sword of Shannara, the big first book that was skipped for this TV series is indeed highly similar to Lord of the Rings. But still entertaining, so I say, so what.

All that said, I found the MTV realization difficult to watch... after 3 episodes I just could not stomach it anymore and found myself spending most of the episode time fast forwarding through another teenage-angst-passion scene.. just to get to yet another stomach turning angst/passion scene. For me, who appreciates a more action and epic driven story, this series falls flat. The show is touchy-feely angst and love driven, great for a romance novel, but horrible for a fantasy high adventure story.

The cinematography is not bad given its a TV/Cable series. I'd say the script and directing are just not good. I don't blame the actors, because I think they could have played the roles differently. But how the roles were depicted and WHAT the cameras/directing spent time on was just awful.

How can one enjoy a show when after 30 minutes you just don't care about the characters any more. Most come across as petulant teenagers. Long-winded dialog scenes have me yearning for them to just SHUT UP and get on with it. I was happen when some characters died because I'd at least not have to listen to their whining dialog anymore.

After 4 episodes I gave up, though the TIVO still had the season pass. Then I noticed it had recorded episode 10, but I never saw it had recorded episodes 5-9 in the interim.. and I didn't miss them. I've got zero desire to go see them.

There is surely a segment of audience that loves this show and would appreciate it and enjoy it. I suspect its the audience that likes romancy period dramas. But if you like epic fantasy/medieval style films and stories, this is NOT for you.

That said, I'll give subsequent seasons/interpretations a try, in case the direction/production/script redirects to the more gritty/real feel of the books and away from the angsty-romance-novel feel it was for Season 1.

Blech... if only I could scrub some of that from my mind.
