- A gay man risks his life confronting hate groups after he accidentally finds himself in what has been labeled the most hateful small town in America. This short documentary highlights his various encounters with town officials, residents as well as the two hate groups headquartered there, in an effort to determine whether or not the town deserves its infamous reputation.—Lawrence Ferrara
- The openly gay director, Lawrence Ferrara, by chance, finds himself in a small Arkansas town. To his surprise, he learned he was in what the activist group "Anonymous" labeled as "the most hateful small town in America."
With an abundance of curiosity and as a life-long advocate for social justice, Ferrara investigates the controversy on both sides of the issue. He conducted interviews with the mayor, the chief of police and a host of other residents in the small Arkansas town nestled in the Ozarks mountains. He mustered up enough courage to contact the two hate groups responsible for the town's infamous reputation: the KKK and the Kingdom Identity Ministries.
The tension in the film hits a high note when Ferrara comes face-to-face with two hate groups. In one particularly disturbing moment, he was told that he should be "exterminated" for being gay. The director, visibly shaken, tries his best to keep his composure, as he digs deeper, exposing the depths of the groups beliefs., all based on their interpretation of the Bible.
The central issue of the film explores why and whether the town deserves the stigma of being labeled "the most hateful small town." (Hence the question mark at the end of the title.) In an attempt to answer this question, the director puts the controversy into perspective when he documents the town receiving an award from the Martin Luther King Jr. Commission as it labels it as a "welcoming and beautiful city" for its efforts to fight the stigma and embrace diversity. Viewers can decide for themselves.
