Sean Byrne in The Loved Ones (2009)
After a decade of making short films, Sean Byrne made his feature directorial debut with the captivating and disturbing 2009 horror film The Loved Ones. ‘Rust’ Is Both a Tribute and a Major Tragedy
Image
There is an alt-timeline in which Rust, writer-director Joel Souza’s pulpy and pathos-fueled Western, is just another tale of an outlaw in his autumn years. It’s simply the latest entry in a genre whose century-plus history is filled with similarly modest sagebrush epics. After a brief theatrical run, a slightly longer tenure on VOD and a lifetime of cable re-runs every Father’s Day, this frontier opus would trot off into the sunset as a footnote in Alec Baldwin’s post-30 Rock, pre-reality TV show career. You know,...

The Witcher star Laurence Fishburne advises fans to "be patient" waiting for final season
Image
We may still be reeling from the season finale of The Wheel of Time, but don't worry, there's plenty more good fantasy television on the way this year. One of the biggest fantasy shows still to come down the pike in 2025 is The Witcher, which will be releasing its fourth season on Netflix. We don't have an exact release date yet, but unless there's a serious shake-up at Netflix, it will come sometime between now and December 31.

This is an important season for the series, since it will be the first time that the white-haired witcher Geralt of Rivia is played by Liam Hemsworth, after previous Geralt actor Henry Cavill stepped down following season 3. Changing a lead actor is always a challenge, and doubly so when they're as central to the series as Cavill's Geralt. Can The Witcher survive this change?

We shall see. Beyond Hemsworth's Geralt, The Witcher...

‘The Crown’ Actress Olivia Williams Opens Up About Why She’ll Never Be Cancer-Free
Image
Olivia Williams is opening up about her cancer journey and that she’ll never be cancer-free because of a delayed diagnosis.

The actress, who has starred in The Crown, The Sixth Sense, Dune: Prophecy and The Ghost Writer, among dozens of other projects, got candid in a recent interview with The Times.

Williams recalled visiting 10 doctors over four years, trying to figure out what was causing her symptoms, including aching limbs, fatigue and chronic diarrhea. After she was initially misdiagnosed with lupus and perimenopause, a doctor finally found a rare cancerous tumor in her pancreas.

“If someone had fucking well diagnosed me in the four years I’d been saying I was ill, when they told me I was menopausal or had irritable bowel syndrome or [was] crazy — I used that word advisedly because one doctor referred me for a psychiatric assessment — then one operation possibly could have cleared the whole...

'Pacific Rim' Prequel Series Set for Prime Video From Amazon MGM and Legendary
Image
It's been a long time since fans of Pacific Rim were treated to some live-action Kaiju mayhem, but all that could be changing soon thanks to Amazon. The prequel series that was announced last year to be in development by Legendary Television has officially landed at Amazon MGM Studios, and together, the two behemoths will adapt the project for Prime Video. Pacific Rim is, of course, the 2013 Guillermo del Toro classic that saw humanity fighting off a barrage of Kaiju with the help of gigantic humanoid mechas known as Jaegers.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, the Pacific Rim prequel series is helmed by Eric Heisserer through his Chronology banner as part of his overall first-look TV deal with Legendary. Heisserer will serve as writer and executive producer on the series, as he's certainly no stranger to the small screen. He most recently was the writer, showrunner, and EP for Netflix's Shadow and Bone series,...

‘Pacific Rim’ Series Lands at Amazon
Pacific Rim (2013)
Legendary’s Pacific Rim series has landed at Amazon MGM Studios. The two studios will adapt the IP together (with Legendary in first position) for Amazon’s Prime Video streaming service.

The Pacific Rim TV project, currently in development, is the first from Legendary’s first-look television deal with Eric Heisserer and his Chronology banner. Heisserer will write and executive produce the series.

The Pacific Rim universe first launched in 2013 with the Guillermo del Toro-directed feature film of the same name. The title has since expanded into animated television (Pacific Rim: The Black), comic books, novels, gaming and toys. In 2018, Steve S. DeKnight wrote and directed a second feature film in the franchise: Pacific Rim: Uprising.

The original Pacific Rim starred Idris Elba, Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day and Burn Gorman. Together, they fought an ongoing war between humankind and monstrous sea creatures. Victory was not enough, we guess,...

Image
The “Pacific Rim” TV series has found a home at Amazon, Variety has learned exclusively.

The live-action project, which Variety exclusively reported on in 2024, is now in development at Prime Video in a deal between lead studio Legendary Television and Amazon MGM Studios.

Jai Courtney Becomes the Apex Predator In ‘Dangerous Animals’ Image [Exclusive]
Image
Although the Australian native Jai Courtney has certainly had his turn as the protagonist, it’s his dastardly work in projects like The Suicide Squad and Buffaloed — where he can use his million-dollar smarmy grin — that seems to lock in audiences the most. But, in his latest role, that smug charisma has been all but replaced by an unsettling gut feeling that tells you to run the other way. Today, Collider is thrilled to unveil an exclusive image of Courtney’s newest monstrous personality as a maniacal serial killer with an obsession for sharks in Dangerous Animals.

Bulky, bleeding, and brutal are just a few words we’d use to describe Courtney’s appearance in the photo that sees him standing on top of a ship’s deck, looking down into the water through beady little shark-like eyes. One hand is bleeding and wrapped, while the other holds a video camera,...

Both Europe’s most right-wing nation and its second hottest destination for international shoots, Hungary has shocked the world with its recent ban on LGBTQ+ public events. But Hollywood is not yet ready to give up on the country’s generous tax incentives.

An amendment to the constitution passed on Monday by the Hungarian parliament codifies a law passed in March that made it an offense to hold or attend events that violate Hungary’s “child protection” legislation, which prohibits the “depiction or promotion” of homosexuality to minors under 18.

The Hungarian government will use measures to enforce the ban including the use of facial recognition software to identify those attending LGBTQ+ public events — such as Budapest Pride — and infractions can come with fines of up to 200,000 Hungarian forints ($546).

It’s not Hungary’s first anti-lgbtq+ law. Back in 2021, the country’s parliament passed a law forbidding the dissemination of content...

Hungary’s Legislation Targeting LGBTQ+ Community Leaves Hollywood Film & TV Productions In Limbo
Image
Several years ago, Hollywood took a stand against North Carolina’s controversial “bathroom bill” Hb 2 and its successor Hb 142 targeting transgender people by pulling production out of the state, including the high-profile decision by Netflix to move what became one of its biggest YA hits, Outer Banks, to South Carolina.

Film and TV studios are now facing a similar moral dilemma with Hungary, a country that has become a leading European filming location. Two of this year’s Best Picture nominees, Dune: Part Two and The Brutalist, were shot there.

Fast-tracked anti-lgbtq legislation last month that banned LGBTQ+ public gatherings — including the annual Budapest Pride — and sparked street protests, was codified this week with a constitutional amendment. It passed overwhelmingly at the Hungarian parliament, which is controlled by a coalition led by populist Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.

This is the latest in a string of moves targeting the LGBTQ community...

‘The Legend of Ochi’ Review: A24 Fantasy Adventure Is Lovingly Crafted Yet Oddly Inert
Image
What to do about a work like Isaiah Saxon’s “The Legend of Ochi?” A curious little fantasy adventure built around the scruffy titular creature that leads a lonely youth on a magical journey, the film boasts intense attention to detail through impressive practical craft and puppetry that should make for a wondrous cinematic experience. But that craft is unfortunately never able to cover up a prevailing lifelessness.

The acclaimed music video director’s debut feature, which premiered back at the Sundance Film Festival and is produced by A24, does break the heart and pulls on plenty of its strings. Just not in the way that it intends. Ultimately, Saxton’s story struggles to assemble its beautiful parts into a moving whole.

This isn’t for lack of effort, as the aforementioned craft breathes plenty of life into the well-worn path that “The Legend of Ochi” takes us down. You...

Image
Warning: This story includes spoilers for the Season 1 finale of Dune: Prophecy.

Set 10,000 years before the theatrical Dune movies, Max’s streaming spin-off series Dune: Prophecy ended its first season with a major reveal and a cliffhanger teeing up Season 2. But viewers paying close attention might have been onto the twist from the very beginning, revealed showrunner Alison Schapker who joined stars Olivia Williams, Travis Fimmel, and Emily Watson for an FYC panel at Universal Studios along with the show’s executive producer, costume designer, production designer and visual effects supervisor.

Prophecy tells the origin of the Bene Gesserit sisterhood, a religious order that plays an influential role in author Frank Herbert’s Dune saga. Valya (Watson) and Tula Harkonnen (Williams) are the sisters training other women to harness the powers of their mind. In flashbacks, Jessica Barden and Emma Canning play, respectively, Valya and Tula. The finale revealed that...

Netflix Reveals New Cast Members for 'The Witcher' Season 4 and 5
Image
Netflix recently unveiled the latest additions to The Witcher ahead of the show's final two seasons. After Henry Cavill stepped away from the show following Season 3, Netflix revealed that the series would be cut short, coming to an end after Seasons 4 and 5 with Liam Hemsworth taking over as Geralt of Rivia. Despite boasting high ratings and viewership figures, The Witcher has been the target of much criticism from fans of Andrzej Sapkowski's novels for making major alterations to the story. Fans of the books will have even more to be upset about with the latest round of casting.

The news of The Witcher's new cast additions comes via Redanian Intelligence. A total of eight new actors have been added to The Witcher for its final two seasons. Camilla Beeput (Dune: Prophecy), Liv Andrushier (A Play in a Day), and Laurie Duncan (Warfare) are the most well-known of the new additions.

The 4 leading epic fantasy shows on TV right now, ranked
Image
In the 2010s, the biggest show on TV was Game of Thrones, HBO's adaptation of George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire books. The show was like The Lord of the Rings, because it was a tale of epic conflict in a medieval mileu. Only it wasn't like The Lord of the Rings at all, because the characters spent more time fighting each other than they did otherworldly forces of evil. The cast was way bigger, the story more sprawling, and everyone spent a lot more time naked.

Also there weren't any elves. Anyway, Game of Thrones was a monster hit, and other studios took notice. Netflix was the first to get their competitor out there: in 2019, the same year that Game of Thrones ended, it debuted The Witcher, a high fantasy series based on a series of books by Andrzej Sapkowski. Amazon Prime Video went hard...

Who Is Scytale? Robert Pattinson's Rumored Dune 3 Villain Role Explained
Image
Whenever your epic sci-fi franchise has a chance to add yet another talented actor to an already-packed ensemble, you simply have to do it. Reports broke in recent days that "Dune 3" director Denis Villeneuve is looking to Robert Pattinson to help fill out the ranks of the upcoming threequel. Naturally, the idea of "The Batman" star joining forces with the likes of Timothée Chalamet's Paul Atreides, Zendaya's Chani, Florence Pugh's Princess Irulan, and many more A-listers is already thrilling enough. But, after recently leading Bong Joon Ho's similarly space-set film "Mickey 17," Pattinson's next exciting career move has every "Dune" fan watching closely.

As with every other significant casting throughout both movies so far, the spice-consuming masses simply need to know: Which new character from author Frank Herbert's novel might Pattinson be playing? The third movie will be adapted from the (somewhat) divisive novel "Dune: Messiah,...

Robert Pattinson Eyed for Major Dune 3 Role Amid Batman 2 Delays
Image
Dune 3 is set to come earlier than expected, with a release date in late 2026. With production allegedly expected to begin this summer, the film series is expanding its stellar cast.

The Dune franchise boasts an A-list ensemble that includes some of the biggest names from the new generation, like Timothée Chalamet, Anya Taylor-Joy, Florence Pugh, and Zendaya, who are expected to return. The franchise also had Academy Award-nominated star Austin Butler in its sequel. Now, Deadline reports that Dune 3 might add another high-profile name to its cast: Robert Pattinson.

Per the outlet, the Twilight actor hasn't received an official offer to join the film series, but Legendary reportedly has a "strong interest" in the actor. There are no details in the Deadline report about who he is set to play if the deal closes, but his role is expected to be "a significant one." However, an additional report published by...

‘Dune 3’: Legendary Circling Robert Pattinson For New Role In Upcoming Installment – The Dish
Image
Exclusive: Even as Denis Villeneuve puts finishing touches on the script for the next installment in the Dune franchise, the director already has his sights set on a new addition to the all-star ensemble. While sources close to the project say no formal offer has been presented, Deadline is hearing there is strong interest in Robert Pattinson joining the cast. Legendary had no comment.

The film already features an A-list ensemble that includes Timothée Chalamet, Florence Pugh and Zendaya, and many are expected to return. Even so, a handful of new roles remain and, as with any Dune project, stars are always lining up at the chance to appear in the Oscar-winning franchise.

While its unknown who Pattinson would play if a deal closes, the role is expected to be a significant one.

As Deadline previously reported, the plan is to shoot the film this summer. Villeneuve is returning to direct.

Big Warner Bros IP Goes Unmentioned At CinemaCon - Batman, Dune, And More
Image
At CinemaCon, Warner Bros chose to speak about their movies that are fairly close to their release date. Sinners comes out in about two weeks, Final Destination: Bloodlines comes out in May, F1 comes out in June, Superman comes out in July, Weapons comes out in August, and Mortal Kombat II comes out in October. The main exception to this was The Bride! which is just under a year from release.

Because WB chose to focus on their movies that are coming out sooner rather than later, some huge franchises went without an announcement.

Supergirl

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow will be the first film to feature Kara Zor-El as the live action main character since Supergirl in 1984, just over forty years ago. Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow started filming in January, a bit before Lanterns. It's possible the team at DC Studios could have cooked up some footage to show fans at CinemaCon,...

Technicolor Bankruptcy: Rodeo FX Acquires Mikros Animation
Image
Rodeo FX – a VFX company whose credits includes “Game of Thrones,” “Stranger Things” and work on Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune” (parts 1 and 2) – reports that it acquired Technicolor’s Mikros Animation unit following parent Technicolor’s shut down last month. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. It’s also not immediately clear how many of the former Mikros Animation employees will join the venture.

Paris-headquartered Technicolor was the parent company of VFX giant Mpc, commercial VFX studio The Mill, Mikros Animation and Technicolor Gaming. It’s closure affected thousands of artists around the world. Following its shut down, which began on Feb. 24, Technicolor Games was acquired by global language translation and AI tech business Transperfect. Also, a band of employees that worked at The Mill in the U.S. launched a new venture, Arc Creative, backed by Dream Machine FX.

Rodeo FX reports that its acquisition of Mikros Animation includes...

‘The Legend of Ochi’ Releases a Behind-the-Scenes Featurette
Image
A24’s The Legend of Ochi pulls back the curtain for a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the fantasy adventure and the process of bringing the film’s weird little creature to life. Writer-director Isaiah Saxon opted to use practical effects, including puppeteers manipulating the creature that sort of resembles a gremlin/monkey hybrid.

“In a remote village on the island of Carpathia, a shy farm girl named Yuri is raised to fear an elusive animal species known as ochi,” reads A24’s synopsis. “But when Yuri discovers a wounded baby ochi has been left behind, she escapes on a quest to bring him home.”

Helena Zengel (News of the World), Finn Wolfhard (Stranger Things), Emily Watson (Dune: Prophecy), and Willem Dafoe (Nosferatu) star in the PG-rated adventure. A24 has set an April 25, 2025 theatrical release.

The Legend of Ochi had its world premiere at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival. It...
