- Bruce Kane (Houston Stevenson) is feeding some sharks when he is questioned by the harbor master for his reasons being on Foxon Island. Bruce claims he is David Burke, a researcher with the Marine Biology Institute which excuses his presence. A beautiful redheaded mother named Erica Shayne (Hannah Jane McMurray) hounds her daughter Courtney (Leigha Sinnott) to write her college essay to win a scholarship before Erica leaves for a date. Erica is separated from her husband Branden and seeks companionship online. Courtney immediately jumps on her bike and blows off writing to hang with her teen friends on their boat. There is goofy Ryan (Chris Jehnert), hunk Pete (Jonathan Cruz), and her best friend lesbian Kat (Amber Janea). Courtney is trying to forget a breakup with her ex, Travis (Tyler White). She convinces her friends to boat out to Foxon Island. They sneak out to the lighthouse at night and tell ghost stories. Kat tells of the group of the former lighthouse keeper Ernie who still haunts the place and is searching for another wife. Courtney is racing Ryan swimming out to a dinghy when sharks show up in the water and surround Courtney. The sharks are back and in full force, knocking Courtney around and leaving her helpless grasping onto the dinghy. Bruce is watching from close by and is ready to save another pre-arranged damsel in distress. He takes the teens back to the lighthouse and gives them warm blankets. Bruce literally gives Courtney the shirt off his back, showing off his strong arms. He has renamed himself David Burke but is still obsessed with Alison who he says had a car accident some time ago rough relationship since. Courtney gives him her number because she wants a summer internship in marine biology. Ryan's dad is waiting at the dock when they return with the boat. Courtney's mother is furious when she gets home but Courtney talks her into a verbal warning since her behavior is an aberration from her otherwise good behavior. The following day, Bruce is cooking while whistling. He brings breakfast to his mother in bed. His mother is a dead woman as the television broadcast details of her funeral earlier. The teens get into varying degrees of trouble with their parents from the previous night's excursion. Courtney and Ryan search for her lost phone in his messy car. While he is feeding the sharks, Bruce hears a cellphone ring. It is Courtney's phone. He answers it offers to meet up to give her the phone at the beach boardwalk where Courtney is a lifeguard. Before returning the phone, Bruce downloads all Courtney's information on the phone into his computer before returning it. When they meet, Courtney and Bruce go for a walk on the beach. He talks to her about the importance of staying close to family and advises her to tell her mother about her plans to go to USC. Courtney invites Bruce to Pete's birthday party that weekend. She departs to have dinner with her father. Back at home, Courtney defers discussing her college situation with her mother. While they are playing a nighttime volleyball game at the beach, Courtney's ex-boyfriend Travis shows up, and Bruce spikes the ball at Travis' head. Courtney is impressed and kisses Bruce. She intends to take what she wants like sharks do. Courtney comes home after school and opens a letter that awards her a scholarship to USC. Erica is surprised that Courtney applied out of state but is proud of her daughter. Bruce tells his dead mother that he found his new Alison and he is in control this time. Courtney and Bruce begin to spend a lot more time together "for the internship." Bruce shows her the ropes. They learn how to make chum which is just putting fish in a blender. Courtney also learns that baby great white sharks are born five feet long. Then they watch the sunset from the top of the lighthouse. Bruce gives Courtney a necklace. Then they have sex in the lighthouse. While she naps, Bruce hacks into her phone to track her whereabouts at all times. Courtney arrives home at 5:00 am and her mother is waiting for her. Courtney is grounded and Bruce overhears the entire conversation on headphones. Courtneys father Branden (Matthew Crawley) promises Erica to find out more about Bruce's background. Branden convinces Courtney to introduce Bruce to him. Courtney invites Bruce to dinner at her father's home and he accepts the invitation. Ryan comes by Courtney's life guard stand to ensure Courtney has not changed her mind about going to the dance with Pete and Kat and himself. Before dinner, Bruce practices with water buoys. The fake dinner goes well; the real dinner does not. Courtney's father thinks Bruce is a liar and does not trust him. They have a tense conversation where Bruce accidentally calls Courtney Alison by mistake. Courtney and her father kick Bruce out of their house. Brandon calls Chuck, the harbor master, to question him about a high school student named David Burke.
Erica, happy after a date with her new beautiful Jack, consoles Courtney about her breakup and gives her approval to attending USC. Bruce stalks Courtney. He watches her sleep, listens to her conversations and puts roses in her school locket. Back on the island, Bruce is approached by Chuck who insists on seeing papers allowing him to live in the lighthouse. Bruce ties Chuck to some weights which pull him overboard, harpoons him, and feeds him to the sharks. Bruce continues to stalk Courtney listening to her dad offer his protection on the dock and even sneaking into her house to watch her sleep. When Courtney awakens briefly at 3 34 am to turn off a closet light, Bruce remains by hiding under the bed. Bruce continues to send roses to Courtney. Courtney discovers she is pregnant. Bruce is thrilled when he overhears that conversation between Courtney and Kat on his tracking device. He mails a baby shark onesie to Courtney in the mail. Courtney thinks Kat is the one who sent it or at least divulged her secret. Courtney calls Kat an asshole assuming the worst about her friend. Upset, Courtney calls her dad from the empty football bleachers. Bruce mocks Courtney's dad with photos of Courtney sleeping and selfies. Branden shows up on the island on his boat with a bat. He kicks down the door and finds a serial killer wall of Bruce's previous newspaper stories. Branden takes photos. Bruce attacks Branden ultimately stabbing him in the stomach with a broken oar during the fight. After wrapping Branden in a net, Bruce tells him he would have been a grandfather but then feeds him to the sharks. Courtney waits on the bleachers for her father to return her phone call. Erica has been mentioning the guy she is online dating named Jack. When Courtney returns home, she discovers that Jack Curtis is Bruce with a fake beard on. He secretly tells Courtney that he is there to protect their child. Courtney has to sleep in the same house while her mother sleeps with Jack. Courtney tries to talk to the police, but they don't believe her. Jack Curtis has warned them that Courtney is unstable. Then Courtney goes to her friends for help. They attempt to prove to Erin that Jack is not who he says he is. Kat finds a photo and texts Courtney. Bruce, who monitors Courtney's phone, tracks Kat down and stabs her on stage in the high school theatre. Kat dies onstage dramatically. Courtney is framed for the murder. Courtney answers the door at home and is taken in for questioning by police for the murder of Katherine Castillo. Erica calls her husband and finds Branden's phone in Jack's pocket. She knows he is lying to her, but Bruce catches her looking in his coat. While Courtney is questioned by detectives, the interview is interrupted. The police step out and Bruce enters. Bruce, posing as Courtney's father, provides Courtney an alibi. Courtney leaves the police station with Bruce. He drives her home while listening to "You Made Me Love You" by Pasty Cline. Courtney manages to jump out of the car at a red light and get away. Courtney enlists Ryan to help her with his father's boat. Bruce has tied Erica up and has taken her to Foxon Island. There, Bruce blasts wedding music and puts on his tuxedo. Erica is in Bruce's mother's room with the serial killer wall display. Bruce comes in to cut up pieces of his mother to feed to the sharks. When the boat arrives, Bruce tells Courtney her mother is still alive. Out of nowhere, Ryan breaks out a chainsaw but is no match to Bruce and his gun. Ryan is shot and falls backward into the shark-infested waters. Courtney is left to save her mother on her own. Still on the boat, she climbs overboard, holds her breath and swims underwater to get away from Bruce momentarily. Courtney, armed with a machete, makes her way to the home on the island and unties her mother. When Bruce comes up the stairs, Courtney hides in the bed, which contains the body of Bruce's dead mother. When Courtney gags, her hiding place is disclosed. There is a struggle, and Bruce is hit in the face with a shard of a broken mirror. Courtney makes a run across the rocks to the top of the lighthouse with Bruce not far behind. Bruce continues to call Courtney "Alison." She tells him that isn't her name and pushes him off the lighthouse with a stick of dynamite. It explodes Bruce and his shark brothers are blown up unless they managed to swim away. Erica and daughter Courtney apologize to one another. Despite that a number of people have died, they forgive one another and promise to stay by one another's side.
