Autism is a disability, not a disease.
2 July 2008 | by lastliberalSee all my reviews

Although I am not a NASCAR fan, I do have Jamie McMurray's old number 42 on my car in support of his battle for Autism. He has a nine-year-old niece with the disability. With Autism striking 1 out of 150 children, many of our favorite stars are affected. John Travolta has a son with autism, as does Jenny McCarthy, who has become a vocal activist for those who have the disability.

Now, Actress Sandrine Bonnaire (Vagabond, A Nos Amours, La Ceremonie), whose sister has autism makes a touching film that helps those who do not work with these individuals have a better understanding of the affliction.

It focuses not only on Sabine, but on others and the problems they have with the anti-epileptics they take and their parents have. You see the same problems with care that we experience. Here in Florida, less than half of the individuals with developmental disabilities receive care from the State. Most are left to their parents to care for.

The contrast between Sabine growing up before she was hospitalized, and the results afterward is amazing, and touches me deeply.
