Odin's Shield Maiden

In this five minute short, a woman stand on the shore, mourning a drowned fisherman. She is briefly joined in her mourning by a group of other women as the enter the ocean and weep. The title alludes to Norse folklore, but that connection is metaphorical, as these are clearly not ancient warriors. Like most Maddin shorts, the approach here is black & white montage with brief inter-titles that provide the barest outline of a story. Yet, a strong sense of the characters emotional state is conveyed, and the images and editing are compelling. All in all, pretty typical of Maddin, not a stand out, but fits well within his broader body of work.
