Storyline

In 1941, three men attempt to flee communist Russia, escaping a Siberian gulag. This movie tells their story and that of four others who escaped with them and a teenage girl, Irena Zielinska (Saoirse Ronan), who joins them in flight. The group's natural leader is Janusz Weiszczek (Jim Sturgess), a Pole condemned by accusations secured by torturing his wife, spent much of his youth outdoors, and knows how to live in the wild. They escape under cover of a snowstorm: cynical American Mr. Smith (Ed Harris), Russian thug Valka (Colin Farrell), comedic accountant Zoran (Dragos Bucur), pastry chef Tomasz Horodinsky (Alexandru Potocean), who draws, Priest Andrejs Voss (Gustav Skarsgård), and Polish Kazik (Sebastian Urzendowsky), who suffers from night blindness. They face freezing nights, lack of food and water, mosquitoes, an endless desert, the Himalayas, as well as many moral and ethical dilemmas throughout the journey towards freedom. Trivia

In the end credits it says, that this movie was only "inspired" by Slavomir Rawicz's book "The Long Walk" (1955), not "based" on it. This movie never claims to be a "true story", but rather to be informed by historical research. Peter Weir only took the basic storyline of Rawicz's popular book, but changed the names and added other characters and events based on historical sources. The central character doesn't represent the real-life Rawicz, therefore his name was changed to "Janusz Wieszczeck". The character "Valka" is not in Rawicz's book at all. See more »

Goofs

In the establishing long shot of the woodcutters, many of the prisoners are clearly only pretending to cut the logs, only tapping them with their axes. See more »

Another great film by Peter Weir.
5 November 2015 | by phuthuytinhyeu711See all my reviews

Peter Weir is true poet of cinema. The poetic is inside most of his works, of many different genre, crime (Witness), sci-fi (The Truman Show), horror (Picnic at Hanging Rock), and the history-adventure (The Way Back).

The Way Back is a rare piece of work. It give me strength to never give up against everything. Landscapes of film are very stunning, beautiful and harsh but full of poetry.

I love the cast of this film, too. Ed Harris, Mark Strong, Jim Sturgess, Saoirse Ronan, and specially, Colin Farrell are fabulous acting.

The latest film of Peter Weir is another great film!! A must-see !!
