- Aiming high to win the affections of Esme Lauterbach (a 6'1"-tall beauty), Dobie allows Zelda to compose his entry in Mr. Pomfritt's music class contest. Dobie performs the song "I'm a Lover, Not a Fighter" from Dwayne Hickman's 1960 Capitol LP.—Gary R. Peterson
- Although not musically inclined, Dobie has joined the school band as the triangle player solely to be close to piccolo player, Esme Lauterbach, who doesn't give him the time of day. Why?: because she is a good head taller than him. In turn, Esme likes Maynard solely because of his jazz brilliance, he who doesn't return her affections since he's just not into girls yet. He also doesn't like the "square" music Mr. Pomfritt makes them play in band. Mr. Pomfritt, who likes jazz but is forced to choose "square" music by the school board, issues a jazz music writing challenge to the class. Meanwhile, Dobie believes he has a plan to win Esme... eventually, when he grows to be as tall as her by having Maynard keep her out of circulation until that time. When that plan fails, Dobie turns to Plan B with Zelda's help: win the jazz writing contest and perform the song himself in front of Esme, this plan despite his lack of musical talent.—Huggo
- In an effort to win the affections of Esme Lauterbach, Kathe Green (a 6'2" beauty) Dobie convinces his Dad to stretch him on an archaic stretching machine and allows Zelda to compose his entry in Mr. Pomfritt's music class contest.
