A suspicious Doakes follows Dexter at all times, which makes it impossible for Dexter to kill. Thirty-eight days after his last kill, Dexter gains an opportunity, but finds himself unable to murder a blind voodoo priest called Jimmy. A member of the 29th St. Kings gang is killed by the leader Little Chino (Matthew Willig), in whom Dexter sees a chance to get his urges under control again. An emotionally unstable Debra returns to work in the Homicide Department. She tries to resume a normal lifestyle, but finds herself under scrutiny from the public. Paul tries to convince Rita that he was framed by Dexter, but she refuses to believe him in spite of the evidence presented to her. Scuba divers discover approximately 30 hefty bags of Dexter's mutilated victims' body parts on the ocean floor.
This is the season opener of the second season of Dexter and it doesn't disappoint. It still has the same, sly dark humor we have been accustomed to with the first season. The acting is terrific and it shows how perfectly casted Michael C. Hall was. There are some surprises here and this episode ended with a scene that will truly make your heart beat fast.
In this episode, "It's Alive!" Dexter has trouble killing anyone because Doakes is on his tail believing something is wrong with him. Meanwhile, Dexter's sister is back at work, five weeks after almost being killed by her psycho fiancé. Also, Rita is being pressured by her ex-husband to bring down Dexter even though she believes Dexter has nothing to do with this.
Overall, this is a fantastic opener to the season. It's acted well and it's really tense despite some comedy. By the end of the episode, Dexter realizes he may be facing a lot more trouble than he did with the Ice Truck Killer. I rate this episode 9/10.
