Storyline

A behind the scenes, promotional short about the making of the feature film _The Gypsy Moths (1969)_, which extensively features free fall skydiving. There are interviews with the director, cast members, and members of the professional skydiving crew while on location in Kansas for three months. The crew explain the development of and demonstrate the use of various equipment used in the experimental skydiving, like the helmet camera and batwings, and discuss and perform new stunts for the film. They also discuss shooting problems like the wind and different rates of fall for performers and cameramen. The proper packing of a parachute is also demonstrated in some detail. More interesting than the full-length movie.
16 April 2010 | by MartinHaferSee all my reviews

This is a 'making of' film that coincided with the release of "Gypsy Moths"--a full-length film about skydivers directed by John Frankenheimer and starring Burt Lancaster, Gene Hackman and Deborah Kerr. As for "Gypsy Moths", it's a mildly interesting film--not at all a must-see but a bit better than a time-passer. However, in an odd case, the making of film is actually better than the movie! This is because by far the best aspect of the original movie is the wonderful mid-air cinematography. Seeing the difficulties encountered and how they filmed the sky divers was actually pretty fascinating--particularly since they were stuck using the technology of the day--which is a far cry from more modern film equipment and computer technology. Interesting and well wroth seeing.
