Storyline

Brian Burns is a seemingly ordinary person. When we meet him, he is sweeping the floors in a suburban high school. But looks can be deceiving. Brian has a story to tell. It is a story of suffering. It is a story of death. It is a story of refugees running for cover at the ominous sound of a plane engine. But it is also the story of strength, courage and hope. It is the story of Sudan. Told through the eyes of ordinary people, living seemingly ordinary lives, Facing Sudan is truly about the Sudanese people struggling to survive. It is the story of the countless thousands who live day to day in refugee camps. It is the story of the world's reaction to the atrocities and violence in that war-torn African nation. The film demonstrates that seemingly ordinary individuals can do extraordinary things. A custodian. A housewife. A pediatrician. A grandmother. Seemingly ordinary individuals. Great history and summary of the crises in Sudan
25 October 2007 | by b-obrien-3See all my reviews

Having viewed numerous films and documentaries on Darfur this has been one of the best. Like only one or two others, it doesn't omit the genocide in southern Sudan, thereby providing a comprehensive history, but without being too complex or confusing. It's helpful information, not overwhelming.

It's also an excellent combination of misery and hope. You get a solid picture of the horrors going on, enough to really imprint on anyone who views it. But then it explores what can be done and looks at real people as examples. It's full of hope and is empowering.

I highly recommend this to anybody wishing to learn more and/or teach and inspire others. It's an excellent centerpiece for a Darfur education/outreach event.
