This semi-autobiographical documentary explores the meaning of Jewish nationalism, Zionism, in the contemporary State of Israel. The meaning of the Jewish State is viewed through the eyes of pre-State Jewish Israelis, Holocaust survivors who emigrated to Israel and Israeli Arabs. The writer/director takes her children and the audience on a journey of discovery which reveals family history, historical background and contemporary struggles relating to the modern State of Israel. Though the film is clearly representing the stance of the Israeli left with regard to peace and the Palestinians, voices of the Israeli Right are heard. Although released in 2004, the issues explored in this film are still relevant, in spite of the changing dynamics of the Israeli political environment. This is an important film for understanding the range and depth of opinion among Israelis regarding co-existence with their Palestinian Arab neighbors. It is well photographed, using mostly original scenes with brief but necessary archival footage. The dialog is not staged and is always on point. Some audiences may find its style a bit preachy. Overall, a very fine presentation of difficult and troublesome issues.
