- Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May are dropped in the vast wilderness of Mongolia and told to await a delivery which turns out to be some basic rations and all the flat-packed parts they need to assemble a vehicle in which they can escape to civilisation.Navigating their way out of this epic, enormous and completely people-free terrain is going to be hard enough, especially with only a few days' worth of food and clean water to see them through, but first they've got to build an entire car, and one of the 'engineers' is the world's most ham-fisted hammer enthusiast.—Baysara
- The trio are dropped in the vast wilderness of Mongolia near the Gobi Desert where they are tasked with building a car and driving it towards civilization. The car kit is delivered to them by air using a helicopter. These 3 boxes also contain food and water for 7 days. Hammond and May assemble all the parts in a single place and start building, while Clarkson is useless and is given the job to cook food. He erects 2 tents and uses the wood from the 2 boxes (which delivered the components) and starts a fire. while Hammond and May make cracking progress, Clarkson is useless and delivers cold slimy food to the duo.
The kit didn't have any bodywork, so Hammond and May have to fashion that from the wood from the crates. They make steady progress, but at the end of day 2 a lot of wiring still needs to be connected. Clarkson starts getting worried if the trio will make it to civilization in time before supplies run out. The next day the car is complete, but the trio find out that the steering has been connected the wrong way. Left is Right and vice-versa. They fix it.
After completing their creation which they name "John", the presenters set off across the vast wilderness. Mongolia is the emptiest country on earth. The nearest city is called "Moron" and is at least 500 miles away and there are no motor-able roads in the country. The trio have been given a directional map by MR Wilman and their first challenge is the Sandy Bit, a detachment of the Gobi Desert. Hammond and Clarkson get down so that May can ascent the car, but it simply doesn't have the power. The going is slow as the car keeps getting stuck in the sands. But eventually they emerge from the desert only to realize that they are exactly where they started from. They decide to drive around the desert and at night they turn the lights on, only to blow a fuse.
Clarkson knows a lot about Mongolia. Genghis Khan had sex with many women without their consent, 1 in 200 people today can trace their ancestry to him. He killed 34 MM people. In Mongolia they treat piles by shredding bits of a wolf's anus on their food (as a wolf never gets piles). In Mongolia, they kill a sheep but making a slice in its neck and squeezing the aorta. Back in the day Genghis could get a message from one part of the empire to the other in 4 days. He had 30 MM horses. Once he entered a town and cut the head off every woman and child to make a pyramid. Mongolia is bigger than Western Europe with a population of only 3 MM.
Next, they reach the watery part and splash mud all over themselves when the car gets stuck in the river. They get up a hill and find the twin lakes, drive past them, past some trees and into a bumpy meadow. It is very bumpy. The next landmark is the Creepy Teepeey. That night they realize that they lost 2 nights of rations in the bumpy meadow. The next morning, rain starts and Hammond fashions a wind screen wiper that doesn't work eventually. Their next landmark is a huge geological scar on the face of Mongolia, which is a scar 400 kms long, formed in the 1905 earthquake and swallowed a whole lake. The think that the next landmark, a wooden cabin, is a pub, but when they get there, it is empty. But then they quickly find a road and reach the wobbly wobbly bridge. The bridge was broken, so John crossed the river effortlessly. But next they reach the boggy bits and May tries the drive right through it (despite warning from Hammond and Clarkson) and promptly gets stuck. They make very slow progress before Hammond takes the wheel and promptly turns the car over in the bog. eventually they get to solid ground. They spend that night in the open and are out of food from that point on.
Clarkson fashions a bow. The next morning it started raining again. Soon, they reach a small forest, which was next on their map. They climb a nearby hill and the decide to drive past the forest and avoid a perilous river stretch, but also adding many more miles to their journey. They eventually get to the river but can't find a way past it as there are mountains on the other side. Eventually the trio find an opening and decide to wade in. The crossing is deep, and John gets completely submerged. Before frying the electrical circuits, the trio decide to back up, but John is stuck. So Clarkson and May have to descend in icy cold water to move the boulders that are preventing John from Backing up. The trio back up John and find another way across the river.
But soon, their path is strewn with billions of boulders of all shapes and sizes. John makes it across with some deft driving from May and eventually the trio find electrical and telephone wires leading into Moron. They turn right as according to Clarkson "its lucky to turn right in Mongolia" and before they know it, they see Moron. They drive into Moron only to find that the local pub is shut.
