One of MANY times I wish I could somehow have gone diving with the crew!
By the title of this episode, "Lagoon of Lost Ships", I thought it was an episode about a place where ships tended to flounder due to geographic considerations. Instead, it's about Truk Lagoon...the location in Micronesia of a HUGE air and sea battle during WWII...where the Japanese lost HUGE numbers of men and equipment. As a result, there was a LOT of damage to the natural beauty of the place...but also some amazing diving opportunities.
For history as well as Cousteau lovers, it's got a lot to make you happy...and that would be me. Plus, while I love scuba, I doubt if I'll ever get to Truk AND won't make dives nearly as deep as a few they did in this show (at about 300 feet...that's a super-dangerous dive). There are also some gutted ships still on the surface and some shallower dives...but it isn't like I get to Micronesia very often!!! And, I am glad they talked about how dangerous all this was and showed them going through decompression stops....just to let folks know this is NOT a business as usual scuba dive! I was very surprised, however, that during one of the dives, you see them taking back some souvenirs (mostly plates)...something divers today are warned never to do! Times and attitudes do change.
All in all, an exceptional episode...one of the best and one to see if you can. Fortunately, it's now posted on YouTube...so you don't have a reason not to try this one!
