Sex & Nudity

  • A character in Season 3 likes to be choked out with a belt while he's having sex. In other words he finds pleasure through extreme pain.
  • There is strong sexual content at times. There are several strong sex scenes with some female and male nudity and thrusting. Several scenes take place in brothels where women are topless and on occasions we see their pubic hair.

Violence & Gore

  • There are lots of shootouts that are detailed with brutal deaths and strong bloodshed.
  • This show contains numerous shocking and unexpected instances of graphic brutal violence.
  • People get executed by men with machine guns, shotguns, and handguns, all of these scenes are extremely graphic. People often get shot in the face with handguns and shotguns. Blood and brains/gore spray out each time.
  • Brains and lots of blood often spray out when people get shot in the head.
  • Gunshots and other gruesome moments.

Profanity

  • Slurs for African Americans, Italians, Polish, Hispanics, Jews, and Irish are heard throughout the series.
  • Occasional profanity in other languages, especially Italian.
  • Sexual dialogue but rarely explicit
  • Irreverent jokes about sex, usually quick, and not explicit.
  • The word "cunt" is used several times throughout the series, but very infrequently. The word "cocksucker" is also used infrequently as well.
  • The word "fuck" is said very frequently throughout the series, along with other milder profanities such as "shit," "goddamn," "bitch", "son of a bitch", "ass", "asshole", and "dick"

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • Cigarette smoking is common and seen in every episode.
  • Use of cocaine can be seen in a few episodes especially by Al Capone.
  • During Season 4 a character becomes addicted to heroin, there are a few scenes of her visibly shooting up
  • Alcoholic beverages are made and consumed constantly. Some references to hard drugs. Specifically in the later seasons, where the "Heroin Trade" becomes a more frequent topic of discussion.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • There is lots of gruesome violence with blood and gore.
  • Bobby Cannavale's character in Season 3 is an insane and sadistic psychopath who gets offended easily and kills people who say things that upset him. Each scene with him is menacing and brutal.
