Storyline

Set in the Prohibition era of the 1920s Boardwalk Empire is the story of Enoch "Nucky" Thompson, the treasurer of Atlantic County, Atlantic City, New Jersey. Due to his relationships with mobsters as well as political contacts, the Federal Government start to take an interest in him. His lavish lifestyle seems at odds with his position, and as well as his connections, there is prolific bootlegging in the area. Written by WellardRockard

Trivia

1920s Atlantic City was re-created for this series in a set in Brooklyn, New York. Executive Producer and pilot Director Martin Scorsese was so exacting in accuracy that (for example) he insisted the planks on the boardwalk be of the same exact size as they were in Atlantic City at that time. Goofs

The series never showed most of the numerous large hotel properties that existed in Atlantic City during the 1920s. While this likely due to the cost of doing so even using CGI, it also makes the city look much smaller than it was. See more »

Never Better
16 February 2020 | by twelvehousebooksSee all my reviews

There has never been a mob/mafia film like this one, and there never will be again. Phenomenal writing, dialogue, acting, directing, photography--the works. I only give the series a 9 because many of the sex scenes, and much of the profanity, could have been left out and the story would not have suffered at all. Ultra-violent, authentic dialogue from that era, and touching in many parts.
