Love in Spring
20 April 2020 | by TheLittleSongbirdSee all my reviews

Have always enjoyed at least the 'Tiny Toon Adventures' episodes that are structured as two or more (most of the time three) segments revolving around a certain theme and often linked together by a wraparound story. They can tend to be uneven in quality, with one segment that tends to not work as well as the others and it is dependent on which character it centres around (am not always a fan of every character on the show).

Made up of three segments "Love Among the Toons", "Elmyra's Spring Cleaning" and "That's Incredibly Stupid", "Spring in Acme Acres" revolves around Valentine and spring themes. While somewhat uneven, with one segment that didn't quite work for me, it is a good fun episode with enough of the 'Tiny Toon Adventures' trademarks. Just wish that those trademarks were there and stronger throughout, starting off not really being there and going to strength until it was wonderfully wacky.

Of the three segments of "Spring in Acme Acres", the one that comes off least has always been "Love Among the Toons". That is a shame because it is the one that is most relevant to the episode's theme. Cupid, or Elmer Fudd, is amusing, there are moments that bring a smile to the face and the animation, music and voices are fine. Was less taken by Concord, who could be annoying and his ineptitude is taken too far somewhat.

There are not enough laughs, the pace isn't as razor sharp and it can veer on being too cute.

"Spring in Acme Acres" other two segments fare much better. "Elmyra's Spring Cleaning" is wonderfully wild and it is easy to relate to Elmyra if you're over-zealous about your house cleaning, the segment manages to bring that along with enough funny and visually inventive moments and Elmyra isn't obnoxious. The best though is "That's Incredibly Stupid", the best premise, being very classic Looney Tunes-like, and the wackiest and funniest. Dizzy can be bland, but he works very well when partnered with a stronger character and he has that in Plucky, one of my favourite 'Tiny Toon Adventures' characters. Their rapport is wonderfully witty in a way that reminds one of classic partnerships in the old Looney Tunes cartoons, it is at its best hilarious and Plucky is on top form.

In all three segments, the animation is bright and colourful with rich detail. The music is never discordant with the action, like old/classic Looney Tunes it adds to it and even enhances it. The theme song is very memorable and infectious. There is plenty of sharp writing, wild pacing and while imagination is lacking a little the storytelling is fun at least. Loved most of the characters, especially Plucky and Concord being the exception. The voice acting is very good, the late Joe Alaskey especially.

Overall, enjoyable but didn't bowl me over. 7/10
