Despite being a fan of 'Animaniacs', 'Pinky and the Brain' and much of 'Tiny Toon Adventures' (though that show wasn't as consistent as the other two), 'Pinky, Elmyra and the Brain' never did much for me even as a child. There are a small handful of watchable episodes, though even they were not great, but at its worst the show was really quite bad. It did have a few strengths, that were obvious in all the episodes, but a lot of major flaws that were never really corrected.

Any episode that has a large focus on Elmyra already sends alarm bells. Elmyra never did anything for me on this show, she was more inconsistent on 'Tiny Toon Adventures', and she was especially intolerable when treated like the main character and in situations like the one here. "How I Spent My Weekend" is a strong example of why 'Pinky, Elmyra and the Brain' never clicked with me and so many and Elmyra's appearance is one of her most annoying.

"How I Spent My Weekend" does have good things. Brain as ever is great, as is Maurice LaMarche's voice acting.

The animation style, reflective of Elmyra's point of view when drawing, is unique for the show. While not my cup of tea personally, it was an interesting style none the less and it was interesting to see how Elmyra's mind works in this respect.

Personally thought however that the recurring song was too repetitive and was more annoying than catchy. The music in general is not that dynamic with the action or that appealing and the theme song is never going to be one of my favourite theme songs in animation to put it politely. The story is very thin on the ground and predictable, with a not particularly appealing premise handled in a very juvenile and twee way (parts don't make sense either).

Furthermore, the writing is less than great (again that's generous). It is very simplistic and tired, on top of being childish and over-cute. Brain is spot on, but Pinky is underused and Roberto was a decent idea but his character writing was dumbed down. Worst of all is Elmyra, who is used too much and is truly obnoxious. Her negative characteristics in 'Tiny Toon Adventures' are amplified to extreme effect and she's very immature and borderline psychopathic. Brain's feelings about her are spot on. The chemistry is very disconnected between the characters throughout.

Concluding, weak. 3/10.
