Titanic 3D Box Office: Much Better Overseas

Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet, Titanic 3D Gary Ross / Jennifer Lawrence / Liam Hemsworth / Josh Hutcherson's The Hunger Games Passes $300m? Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg's American Reunion landed at no. 2 on the North American box office chart, according to studio estimates found at Box Office Mojo. At 3,192 locations, the R-rated comedy took in $21.5 million — including $660,000 earned at Thursday midnight screenings. That's quite a bit lower than the $25 million some had been expecting as late as Friday evening, or the near-$30 million predicted by Box Office Mojo a few days ago. If those estimates are correct, Universal will surely claim that American Reunion easily surpassed the $18.7 million earned by the original American Pie at 2,508 sites in 1999. In 2012 dollars, however, American Pie would have earned approximately $29 million. And what that means is: many more tickets were sold for American Pie than for American Reunion. Also, remember that American Reunion cost a

Greg Mitchell: Game Change As It Happened: When Tina and Amy Nailed Sarah Palin

Greg Mitchell: Game Change As It Happened: When Tina and Amy Nailed Sarah Palin
After months of promotion HBO's film on Sarah Palin and the 2008 campaign, Game Change, will air (finally) this weekend. Conservatives (including Palin, who has not seen the movie) claim that the film is completely unfair and mainly fiction, plus a valentine to Obama from Democratic Hollywood. But the filmmakers say it's (sadly) all fact, except that Julianne Moore plays Palin even better than Palin played Palin.

The only thing surprising to me is that anyone at this late date would be surprised by any embarrassing facts about Palin. The truth has been known almost within hours of McCain lifting her out of obscurity back at the end of August 2008. There even persists in some quarters (including elements of mainstream media) the fantasy that Palin actually boosted McCain and drew support from women voters, when the facts (and the polls) always ran in the opposite direction.

Rather than in retrospect, I

The greatest actress in American political history

Sarah Palin lacked the preparation or temperament to be one heartbeat away from the presidency, but what she possessed in abundance was the ability to inflame political passions and energize the John McCain campaign with star quality. That much we already knew. What I didn't expect to discover after viewing "Game Change," a new HBO film about the 2008 McCain campaign, was how much sympathy I would feel for Palin, and even more for John McCain.

The movie is largely told from the point of view of two McCain advisers, Steve Schmidt (Woody Harrelson) and Nicolle Wallace (Sarah Paulson). Schmidt was instrumental in the selection of Palin (Julianne Moore) as the running mate of McCain (Ed Harris), and Wallace was another senior adviser. During the campaign, they share their concern as Palin reveals a comprehensive lack of knowledge about current events.

In the days before Palin's selection, it seemed so much simpler.

Album Review: Comedian Doug Stanhope Holds Nothing Back in Oslo

Album Review: Comedian Doug Stanhope Holds Nothing Back in Oslo
We might be partial to reviewing CDs of musical tracks, but it is invigorating when a CD falls into our lap that doesn’t consist of instruments and tempos infused with vocals. We might be new to evaluating comedic CDs, but Doug Stanhope’s, Oslo: Burning the Bridge to Nowhere , was a good place to start with our newest career addition. Stanhope’s premiere CD/DVD dropped May 3rd, via Roadrunner Comedy. The biggest mystery of the disc is where it was actually recorded. Clearly, being humorous isn’t within us, but it was worth an attempt. Oslo: Burning the Bridge to Nowhere was recorded in an abandoned factory in the suburb of, drum...

Julianne Moore as Sarah Palin Photo: HBO's Game Change

Julianne Moore as Sarah Palin, Game Change Julianne Moore (not Tina Fey?) as Sarah Palin, the bespectacled creature from the far corners of the world that the Republican party unleashed during the 2008 U.S. presidential campaign. At that time, Palin's Bridge to Nowhere almost took her to the vice-presidency of the United States; now four-time Academy Award nominee Julianne Moore brings her to life in HBO's upcoming Game Change. A dramatization of the 2008 campaign, Game Change stars Moore as Palin, Ed Harris as John McCain, Woody Harrelson as Steve Schmidt, McCain’s senior campaign strategist; Ron Livingston as Mark Wallace, another top McCain advisor; and Melissa Farman as Dancing with the Stars contestant Bristol Palin. No word yet on who'll play Barack Obama, Joe Biden, and their advisors. Jay Roach, the director of both HBO's 2008 drama Recount — about the messy 2000 Us presidential election — and Meet the Fockers (!), [...]

Doug Stanhope’s new album “Oslo-Burning The Bridge To Nowhere” in stores May 3rd

Roadrunner Comedy is excited to announce that premiere comedian Doug Stanhope will be releasing new live CD/DVD package Oslo: Burning The Bridge To Nowhere on May 3rd, 2011. This is Roadrunner Comedy.s first release.

Recorded in an abandoned factory in the Grünerløkka suburb of Oslo, Norway, the performance is as spontaneous and unhinged as anything Stanhope has ever done. Originally a sewing machine factory converted to a German WWII bunker, the setting forOslo is anything but conventional. Whereas most comedy specials are filmed on an elaborate stage, Stanhope and Nikon Norway filled a dilapidated industrial space with lights and folding chairs, ultimately allowing the material be the focus of this release.

Oslo.s madcap backdrop mimics the process that led to the recording: Bjorn Opsahl, one of Norway.s most notorious photographers, planned only to do a portrait session with Stanhope in Long Beach. The shoot went so well

Was there any doubt? Actress Alyson Hannigan will reprise her role as Michelle Flaherty in “American Reunion.” Her character married Jason Bigg’s Jim Levenstein character in “American Wedding.” According to Deadline, her return was questionable due to the CBS sitcom “How I Met Your Mother.” She will work on the film before her return to the television show. Life continues to be one big disappointment for 'Firefly' fans

The "Help Nathan Fillion buy 'Firefly'" campaign isn't going anywhere. And we mean no disrespect to Joss Whedon, "Firefly" or its fans when we say this, but...

Duh.

Blastr (via Movieline) takes a look at the progress of some die-hard browncoats' attempts to buy the rights to the series from 20th Century Fox (so Nathan Fillion, who made an offhand remark about doing just that if he won the lottery, could revive the deceased series), and it looks as though the death knell has come down directly from Camp Whedon.

"Dollhouse" and "Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog" writer -- and bride of Whedon's brother Jed -- Maurissa Tancharoen broke the news to fans with what some might interpret as a dismissive tweet. "Guys, no one in the Whedonverse is in support of www.helpnathanbuyfirefly.com," she writes, "Please save your money!"

Naturally, everyone involved took this very well and dropped the subject.

Super Bowl: The Best That Never Was!

For sportswriters, the big game means a clash of the titanic cliches-even if the teams don't look so super. How does Buzz Bissinger go the distance to give his 110 percent for Sunday in Big D?

It is the sportswriting version of the Bataan Death March, The Longest Yard with the score still tied, the Bridge to Nowhere.

Related story on The Daily Beast: How Many Americans Know the Star Spangled Banner?

It's always like this in the two weeks leading up the Super Bowl. Jack be Nimble Jack be Quick, stories about the Super Bowl are mostly shit.

Truth be told, you hit a dry gulch right off the bat. You know you don't have an arrow in the quiver. You know the word bag is as empty as Mother Hubbard's cupboard during a grocery strike. But a sportswriter has to do what a sportswriter has to do. When the going gets tough,
