Balthazar Blake (Nicolas Cage) is a master sorcerer in modern-day Manhattan trying to defend the city from his arch-nemesis, Maxim Horvath (Alfred Molina). Balthazar can't do it alone, so he recruits Dave Stutler (Jay Baruchel), a seemingly average guy who demonstrates hidden potential, as his reluctant protégé. The sorcerer gives his unwilling accomplice a crash course in the art and science of magic, and together, these unlikely partners work to stop the forces of darkness. It'll take all the courage Dave can muster to survive his training, save the city and get the girl as he becomes The Sorcerer's Apprentice.Written by

Although the film, as its title shows, is ultimately based on Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's famous German poem "Der Zauberlehrling" from 1797 (which inspired the piece of music by Paul Dukas from 1897, also briefly heard here, which in turn was used in the adaptation in Fantasia (1940) starring Mickey Mouse), the German version completely missed this connection, translating the title instead as "Duell der Zauberer" (Duel of the Sorcerers). When Dave listens to the radio while playing with his "Musical lightning" project, he is clearly standing in a Faraday Cage so to prevent any electric shock. This kind of equipment is also supposed to block any radio signal, which means that his radio would not be able to work as clearly as we can hear.
While it is correct that a Faraday cage would block radio signals, there is no reason an external antenna would not be used to bring a radio signal into the cage. This is done all the time by electrical engineers. See more »
The war between Sorcerers was fought in the shadows of history, and the fate of mankind rested with the just and powerful Merlin. He told his secrets to three trusted apprentices: Balthazar, Veronica, and Horvath. He should have trusted only two.

There is a very brief (30 seconds or less) scene at the very end. SPOILER: The scene opens in the store Arcana Cabana, where we see the Mickey sorcerer hat under glass, then Horvath's hat, followed by a hand (Obviously Horvath, since we see his cane as well) picking it up and a roach left behind. Believe it or not, this is actually a pretty good movie. I was annoyed with a few aspects of the movie such as my extreme annoyance with Jay Baruchel. But I think Nic Cage carried the movie. He is a very talented actor and he proves it in each movie he's in whether it's good or bad.
This is about wizard named Balthazar who lives in modern day New York City. He has been searching for many centuries for the perfect kid who would be finally be his apprentice. He finally meets that kid and he trains him to be the one to save the world.
The acting is pretty good. Of course Nic Cage is more than good. I was also impressed at Alfred Molina. Jay Baruchel is very annoying here. I just wanted to punch him in the face.
People compare this movie for some reason to Harry Potter. I'll say now that this is no Potter. This film is no masterpiece like the Potter series but it still is good.
Overall, this is a pretty good family movie. I would turn a deaf ear to the critics and watch this. I rate this film 8/10.
