    • Trivia
Ezra Meeker (1830-1928) married Eliza Jane Sumner in 1851. From April to October 1852, they traveled to Oregon Territory along the Oregon Trail. The wagons of Meeker's grouping traveled together by informal agreement; there was no wagon master in overall charge. In 1853, he moved to what later became Washington Territory, and, in the 1860s, became a millionaire growing hops for beer; he lost everything in the 1890s due to insect infestation and the Panic of 1893. In 1877, he founded the city of Puyallup, WA, near Seattle, and in 1891, he helped found the Washington State Historical Society. In 1906, he retraced the Oregon Trail in covered wagon, the first of several trips to memorialize the trail.
