Storyline

When Derek Morgan visits his mother in Chicago, he always visits the grave of a teenager whose corpse he found at age 13. This time he's arrested by detective Stan Gordinski, as a suspected serial killer, blamed for the death of several other teenage boys, none of whom were ever identified, embarrassingly based on a profile Jason wrote without knowing the details. The team is baffled. Derek has a whole past he hid from them, including a gang-related juvenile criminal record expunged by a judge at the recommendation of the highly respected local youth center director Buford, who inspired his - also previously unmentioned - career as a college football-scholarship student until he had a knee injury. Finally, an unlikely alternative suspect is shown to have his own, ongoing hidden past... Written by KGF Vissers

Det. Stan Gordinski: Agent Gideon, right?
Jason Gideon: Yes
Det. Stan Gordinski: I owe you a big thank you! I had no suspects at all until you looked over my case for me and sent me this profile. Everything in it points to that son of bitch, Derek Morgan
[hands over profile]
Jason Gideon: [browses through dossier] I profiled him?
Det. Stan Gordinski: It's all right there
Dr. Spencer Reid: Detective, a profile is just a guide
Det. Stan Gordinski: This one guided me to him
Emily Prentiss: They're really more useful in the elimination of suspects rather than the inclusion
Det. Stan Gordinski: That's not the way you presented it to me

Character-development for the win!
20 April 2011 | by TentaculaSee all my reviews

This episode left me surprisingly happy and that is not because the case blew me away. The "whodunitism" of this episode is really not very high, however I feel that it is focusing on the actual characters (mostly Morgan, but with many interesting dialogues or statements of the other characters) and how they are dealing with a situation that puts their faith into each other to the test.

I love how the geekiness of Reid is depicted in the very beginning and in the same scene I am finally okay with Emily Prentiss being on the team.

I very much like the background information that is given on Derek, even though it might be a little much of the "hard on the outside, soft on the inside"-cliché, but then again - I am a sucker for clichés.

The end of this episode is leaving me very satisfied because I am always hoping to get to know the characters better through their actions. If you are however searching for something that will blow your mind away because of the brutality or action, maybe this should not be your first pick.

Favorite quote of the episode: "C'mon Hotch, we all have secrets."

-Tenta
