Storyline

Goyband is a romantic comedy that fuses music and pop culture with a satirical (albeit gentle) look into Orthodox Judaism and Kabbalah. The word "Goy" is Yiddish for a non-Jewish male. In our story, Adam Pascal of "Rent" fame plays ex-boyband pop star, Bobby Starr. Bobby Starr is booked to headline the grand opening of the first Kosher Casino in the Catskills, (hence the title Goyband.) The reason Bobby gets this unlikely booking is that the daughter of the hotel owner, Rebekkah (played by Amy Davidson of "8 Simple Rules for Dating my Teenage Daughter") has a secret crush on him - hiring him to perform live at the hotel is her last act of rebellion before committing to her arranged marriage. Written by Chris Grimm and Christa McNamee

Goyband (aka Falling Star): A Thoroughly Entertaining Movie
9 April 2010 | by mebenik32See all my reviews

This movie is the perfect vehicle for the extremely talented Adam Pascal (best known for originating roles in Rent and Aida on Broadway) as it allows him to sing, dance, and act. Pascal stars as Bobby Starr, a washed up 1990s boy band star who has been struggling as a solo artist (he can barely even book gigs at a local bowling alley). All of that changes when his biggest fans (Rebekka, played by Amy Davidson, and her friends) get him the break he has been looking for: a chance to perform at the Mazel Hotel. The film is a Jewish musical version of "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" with lots of references to "Fiddler on the Roof" thrown in. I enjoyed that this movie was unpredictable, and it is one of the best low budget, independent films I have seen. I would definitely recommend it!
