When Gerald meets Orianda, he almost immediately falls in love with her. She mentions to him that she is alienated from her father and has not seen him for three years. He convinces her to visit and on arrival, she realizes that her father is living with another woman, Lizzie. Orianda decides to stay permanently and although her mother is dead, she takes it upon herself to ensure that Lizzie leaves. Gerald is somewhat puzzled by Orianda's attitude as from all appearances, Lizzie is a good woman and her father is happy.
