Regime Change in Seven Days

Just Cause is a 3rd person action/adventure game produced by Avalanche Studios and published Eidos.

It follows Rico Rodriguez, a member of the Agency which is a covert arm of the CIA that the U.S. government uses to manipulate the domestic situations in other countries. The game takes place in the fictional Caribbean nation of San Esperito. This country is ruled by the violent dictator Salvador Mendoza who enforces totalitarian rule on the island nation and its your job to topple the unfriendly regime.

The game takes place on a massive 400sq mile map, one of the largest non MMO maps in a video game. You help the guerillas liberate cities and take sides in a massive cartel gang war, all with the end goal of killing the current dictator.

Sounds awesome right? The game offers many vehicles like cars, planes, and boats that can all be piloted. The Driving mechanics are decent, the physics engine is OK, the dialogue is awkward at times but is good enough, the missions get repetitive, but the scenery is breathtaking with stunning visuals. The game has a GTA inspired wanted system that applies for the authorities and Montano Cartel, one being the lowest wanted level and 5 being the highest. You can use several guns to fight with but the game uses an auto aim system because of the unrefined controls.

The map despite its enormity can get boring after a while. The foliage is pretty much identical on every part of the island and the map doesn't stray away from endless rivers, mountains, and jungles. Transport is hard as the grappling hook does not do a good job at hanging on to anything so the player will either have to have an extraction which only goes to safe houses you have unlocked, or drive, fly, or boat there themselves which wouldn't be so boring if the scenery was more dynamic. Going from one side of the island to the other on foot would literally take hours.

However the cities are still fun to walk around in (despite re-used building models) and police chases are fun and never get old.

The action will be attractive to anyone with a history with action games or spy thrillers. The story is cliché but still good enough. The characters are predictable and the dictator lacks any real character but satisfies in being the one-dimensional bad guy Hollywood would want. The scenery is beautiful despite the slightly mediocre graphics.
