Easter Sunday is a day to celebrate life, and NBC is doing its part by bringing Jesus to life on the small screen — well, live on the small screen, anyhow. “Jesus Christ Superstar” — the ’70s rock opera that’s dominated Broadway, toured the world, and even became a movie in 1973 — is being reimagined with John Legend in the lead role of our Lord and savior.

Billed as a staged concert, the production will air live from the Marcy Armory in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, N.Y., and NBC has recruited an all-star crew to bring the beloved music to life. David Leveaux (“Nine”) is directing alongside Emmy Award-winning live television director and executive producer Alex Rudzinski (“Hairspray Live!”), Emmy- and Tony Award-winning costumer designer Paul Tazewell (“The Wiz Live!”), and the musical director of the “Jesus Christ Superstar” world arena tour, Nigel Wright.

Oscar winner Penelope Cruz is set to receive an honorary Cesar, France’s top film prize, at this year’s Cesar Awards, the French Academy announced Monday.

Calling her a “muse of great filmmakers, a radiant Latin beauty,” academy president Alain Terzian said the Spanish star has the “ability to shine in both international productions and intimate films,” citing her roles in Ridley Scott’s The Counselor, Rob Marshall’s Nine, Kenneth Branagh’s The Orient Express and Sergio Castellitto’s Don’t Move, among others.

2018 Art Directors Guild Awards preview: Look for Oscar winner among nominees
The 21st annual Art Directors Guild Awards take place on Saturday (Jan. 27). These kudos have a stellar record at previewing the outcome of the Best Production Design race at the Academy Awards. Over the first two decades of these prizes, the eventual Oscar winner has always numbered among the Adg nominees in the various categories.

Period film contender “The Shape of Water” is locked in a tight race with fantasy film nominee “Blade Runner 2049” to win the Oscar for Best Production Design according to our predictions. Two other period film nominees that are set in WWII — “Darkest Hour” and “Dunkirk” — sit in third and fourth place respectively — while fantasy contender “Beauty and the Beast” rounds out our top five predicted Oscar nominees.

Will Rob Marshall Direct The Live-Action ‘Little Mermaid’ For Disney?

Deadline is reporting that Rob Marshall, who is busy, hard at work finishing up on Disney’s Mary Poppins Returns, has been offered the directing reigns on another big project over at the Mouse House.

The film in question is the live-action version of The Little Mermaid, an adaptation of Disney’s 1989 animated musical. Marshall is said to be the studio’s top choice for the high-profile gig, and of course the filmmaker is no stranger to the movie musical after directing the likes of Chicago and Nine. He’s also helmed Memoirs of a Geisha as well as Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, and Into the Woods, both over at Disney, so their offering of the big job is an obvious one as Marshall certainly has the chops.

‘Lion’ and Nicole Kidman Dominate Australia’s AACTA Awards
“Lion” picked up a further five prizes at the Australian Academy of Cinematic and Television Arts Awards. Its haul included best picture and best director for Garth Davis.

The prizes were presented Wednesday evening at the Star Event Centre in Sydney. Earlier in the week at a prize-giving lunch, “Lion” made a clean sweep of the technical awards, winning in all seven categories for which it was nominated. In total, the film, which was produced by The Weinstein Co., won 12 Aacta awards.

The cast of “Lion” was richly rewarded. Nicole Kidman was named best supporting actress, Dev Patel was named best supporting actor, and child star Sunny Pawar was named best actor, becoming the youngest-ever recipient.
