A re-evaluation of a pretty well-liked Aussie kids show but for the worse
6 April 2016 | by WakenPayneSee all my reviews

Round The Twist was seemingly huge in Australia amongst children, make no mistake - while it may say this started in 1989 and went on for 4 seasons I remember watching it on television in the early to mid-2000's, it was also a show I remember being played on the last days of Primary School for one of the years I was there. I didn't really remember anything about the show except for the show's theme (and looking back, it's not hard to see why considering how catchy some of the lyrics are, to me - it's easily the best part of the show), there was a family in a lighthouse and weird things happened based on the show's continuity seemingly being "It exists because shut up it does!" and the toilet humour and this is the worst part.

The plot is that Peter, the older son of the Twist family (no... that's really their name) is in a play as Dracula and the people playing the servants of Dracula want to be Dracula for an opportunity to play-sucking the helpless, hypnotized girl's neck (and they suddenly got creepy!) and we do get an amusing bit in the opening where they screw up the sound effects and generally screw up everyone's cue. Meanwhile in a completely unrelated plot point, ghosts exist now as the thing that will be brought up and never mentioned again that really would be brought up and mentioned all the time. The Inspector of ghosts sees what kind of ghost another one is and if he can't scare a kid, he'll have to stay in a graffiti ridden bathroom for the next century or so. When the servants throw Peter in the bathroom to get this girl to let them play-suck her neck in a play and he only gets one successful attempt but the inspector wasn't looking, so Peter befriends the ghost and decide to scare the bullies.

Okay, so this really doesn't have a strong story at all. The way in which the ghost scares the kids is probably the single most questionable thing I've seen in a television program EVER! The thought this aired on national television in front of children and adults is really head-scratching and I did watch this show as a kid, granted not every episode but WHAT THE HELL?! It just seems to be wrong on so many levels.

Okay, what else, the acting from Jeffrey Walker is horrible (the fact he would go on to do Home and Away doesn't shock me) but the other main players seem to be passable except maybe Jasper Bagg not only took looking like Vyvvyan from The Young Ones to superhuman levels but has a performance to match how over-the-top he goes, when he shouts it was a "please stop," kind of thing.

This really doesn't hold up, I mean at all. I'm pretty sure if you have an extreme nostalgia factor for this show then you probably will like this. Me personally, either this episode was one of the bad ones or this show really doesn't hold up, although I will say to it's very little credit, I didn't find it as bad as I thought it was going to be.
