One needn't be Jewish to fully appreciate the sentiment of this one woman musical. The story of both grandmothers and the granddaughter is one for the ages. The past should never be forgotten and its affect on the future is crystal with the help of this story. Bubbe Meises is a Yiddish term for Grandmother's stories...sort of like old wives tales in many ways, if you will. For instance, and many Italians and Irish could relate to this as I am one who heard it too many times as I was growing up: if you step over someone as they are sitting/laying on the floor, you must step back over them the other way in order for them to continue growing. Also, if you're going to sew a button onto clothing that you are presently wearing, you must hold a thread between your teeth as you do so..or else you'll sew you're brains together. These are just two of the many bubbe meises worked into this wonderful play, sure to bring both a smile to your face and a tear to your eye. The story of the granddaughter's struggles is relatable. How she uses the wit and wisdom that she learned from her grandmothers is inspirational. As one who saw this story in the live stage version and now owns the video, it truly is entertaining and touches your heart.
