    Storyline

    Edit
Adam survives the assassination attempt by Angela Wells but while he is in hospital recovering, major terrorist attacks are directed against fuel depots crippling British industry and the standard of living. Just as Adam is released from hospital, some people start to die of a strange bacteriological infection spreading panic in the general population. Working with MI-6 chief Michael Collingwood and one of his agents, Ros Myers, Harry Pearce comes to the conclusion that there is a move within certain parts of the British government and civil service to bring in a new political and administrative order. Jo is sent to keep an eye on the Prime Minister's son, a university student, and others in the section take on new roles. One member of the MI-5 team does not survive and it is apparent that the conspirators will stop at nothing to achieve their goals. Meanwhile, Adam hires a nanny, Jenny, to take care of Wes. —garykmcd

Harry Pearce: I'm sorry-that's the sound of incredulous laughter being stifled.

    Gas and Oil: Part 1
I thought the finale for series 4 was flat. Series 5 though opens with a tense story.

Britain is experiencing devastating terrorist attacks including biological warfare. There are gas and oil shortages, hospitals are under pressure.

The Prime Minister is also under pressure and Harry Pearce suspects that a coup is underway with shadowy people from business, media and the security services.

Adam Carter survives his injuries from the previous story. However one operative loses their life in this one.

It makes the stakes personal for the Spooks team. There is a tense finale as a third terrorist attack is underway but this time the target could be Harry.

The episode introduces Robert Glenister in the regular role as the Labour Home Secretary. There are some excellent actors in this story from Roger Allam to John Castle.
