Storyline

Maverick magistrate Michael Rafferty dispenses his own brand of courtroom justice with his own brand of humour - ironic and black respectively, coloured by a dislike of privilege and a suspicion of the police. This tough series portrays events from Rafferty's life both inside and outside the courtroom. The first pilot episode was made in May 1984 and featured Chris Haywood in the title role. The second pilot with John Wood was made in October 1984 with the series going into production in March 1985.
