Amber Hagerman was nine years old when she was abducted while riding her bicycle, prompting her mother to seek out a system that alerts the nation of abducted children. This became today's Amber Alert system.
At 3:30 PM on Saturday, January 13, 1996, nine-year-old Amber Hagerman was riding her bike in an abandoned grocery-store parking lot when she was abducted; two days later she was murdered. Her mother wanted to set up a system for missing and exploited children. This led to what is now known as the Amber Alert, but Amber Hagerman's case remains unsolved 20 years later.—Delesha Patterson
