Casting Society to honor 'Into the Woods' director Rob Marshall at Artios Awards
While the Oscars have yet to make room for casting directors — a pivotal part of the Best Picture equation — the oversight isn't stopping the Casting Society of America from readying its third decade of picking up the Academy's slack. Csa announced Monday morning that the 30th Annual Artios Awards will honor Academy Award-nominated and Emmy Award-winning director Rob Marshall and Emmy Award-winning casting director Ellen Lewis for their individual work in the world of casting. The news arrives with nominations in categories of television, theater, new media and short film, and on the heels of the ceremony's move from November to Jan. 22, the thick of the awards season. Feature film nominations will be announced closer to the show date. Rob Marshall and Disney to Adapt Steven Sondheim's Into The Woods

Walt Disney Pictures and Rob Marshall are joining forces again on a new project. Marshall is set to direct a film adaptation of Steven Sondheim's acclaimed Broadway musical, Into The Woods. The project is being produced by Marshall and John DeLuca via their production company Lucamar Productions for Disney. James Lapine, who wrote the stage musical with Stephen Sondheim, is on board to adapt the story for the screen.

This project marks the first film under a new 2-year development deal between Disney and Lucamar. I am not familair with this play but know of Sondheim's work. Marshall continues to deliver blockbusters for Disney, and I am sure that this film will be a hit for the studio. There is a big trend of plays being turned into feature films. Tom Hooper (The Kings Speech) is currently working on Les Miserables.

Here is some information from the official press release:

Rob Marshall and Johnny Depp will bring us The Thin Man

Johnny Depp has had his eyes set on this project for quite some time now. He’s wanted to reunite with Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides director for this project, and until now, those were only wishes. In a press release sent out today, Rob Marshall has officially signed on to direct a remake of the classic film The Thin Man. With this press release comes the news that Nine producer John DeLuca will be producing this flick through his and Marshall’s Lucamar Production company.

Depp already has another ambitious project ahead of him, that being the remake of The Lone Ranger. I wonder how this project will effect the timeline currently in place for the that film, if there even is one. There’s also the obvious question of which actress would make the perfect Nora Charles. Marshall seems to work well with Depp and they are both perfect for this film. I can't think of another actor who would be as good a fit for the role of Nick Charles. Will Kirstie Alley be Emmy good luck charm for 'Dancing With the Stars'?

Will Kirstie Alley be Emmy good luck charm for 'Dancing With the Stars'?
Kirstie Alley and the choreographers of "Dancing With the Stars" have something in common -- they have each contended for eight Emmy Awards. However, while Kirstie Alley took home Best Comedy Actress for "Cheers" in 1992 and Best TV Movie/Mini Actress for "David's Mother" in 1994, the dance designers have never waltzed off with an Emmy. In 2006 -- its first year of eligiblity -- "Dancing With the Stars" earned three bids for Cheryl Burke, Tony Dovolani and Nick Kosovich but they were all bested by the team of Charles Kaplow, Kenny Ortega and Bonnie Story who choreographed "High School Musical." In 2007, there was a three-way tie as both Mia Michaels and Wade Robson won for separate routines on "So You Think You Can Dance" while John DeLuca and Rob Marshall prevailed for "Tony Bennett: An American Classic" leaving Louis van Amstel of "Dancing With the Stars" the sole loser. In 2008, Wade R.

Composer A.R. Rahman Interview 127 Hours

For his new drama-thriller, 127 Hours, director Danny Boyle re-teams with innovative Indian film composer A.R. Rahman who won two Academy Awards for his work on Slumdog Millionaire. Rahman has created an awesome score to convey the 127-hour ordeal of American mountaineer Aron Ralston when his arm is pinned by a boulder deep inside a Utah canyon and he must resort to desperate measures in order to survive.

We sat down for a round table interview with Rahman to talk about his new film. He told us about his collaboration with Danny Boyle, why he chose a personal and intimate score with Western influences to help bring to life the director’s unique vision, and how much he enjoyed once again being part of the Oscar-winning team behind Slumdog Millionaire. Rahman also liked our suggestion that he consider working with Ryan Murphy on a Bollywood version of Glee. Hit the jump

When she forces him aboard the Queen Anne’s Revenge, the ship of the formidable pirate Blackbeard (Ian McShane), Jack finds himself on an unexpected adventure in which he doesn’t know who to fear more: Blackbeard or the woman from his past.

Can Evan Lysacek win 'Dancing With the Stars' that elusive choreography Emmy?

Can Evan Lysacek win 'Dancing With the Stars' that elusive choreography Emmy?
The "Dancing With the Stars" lineup for season 10 includes newly crowned Olympic figure skating champion Evan Lysacek. Three other Olympic champs have waltzed off with the top prize on this reality show -- speed skater Apolo Anton Ohno (season 4), figure skater Kristi Yamaguchi (season 6) and gymnast Shawn Johnson (season 8). But none of their Olympic gold rubbed off on the show, which has failed to win the Emmy Award for choreography for four years running.

In 2006, "Dancing With the Stars" had three nominations in the choreography category but lost to "High School Musical." In 2007, there was a three-way tie as "So You Think You Can Dance" took two Emmys and "Tony Bennett: An American Classic" also won, leaving "Dancing With the Stars" the sole loser. And in both 2008 and 2009, "So You Think You Can Dance" repeated, albeit with just one win each time and sharing the most recent victory with the 81st annual Academy Awards.

'The Sopranos' Win & Lose Big at Emmys

'The Sopranos' Win & Lose Big at Emmys
The Sopranos, miniseries Broken Trail, Tony Bennett and Prime Suspect shared the glory at the Emmy Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday night, claiming three honors apiece. But, as well as being among the big winners, mobster drama The Sopranos was also the ceremony's big loser - despite making history as the Emmys' most nominated show, its cast members were overlooked in all the individual acting categories. Even Boston Legal star James Spader was stunned when he beat The Sopranos' James Gandolfini for the Best Actor prize. He said, "Oh my goodness, I feel like I just stole a pile of money from the Mob - and they're all sitting right over there." Instead, the show, which ended in America in May, claimed the Outstanding Drama Series prize and awards for writing and directing. In his send-off speech, the show's creator David Chase joked, "Let's face it, if the world and this nation was run by gangsters... Maybe it is!" Tony Bennett's hits show, Tony Bennett: An American Classic, claimed the night's Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Special prize, while Rob Marshall was named Outstanding Director for the special and Bennett himself took home the Outstanding Individual Performance honor. Robert Duvall and Thomas Haden Church won acting prizes for acclaimed western Broken Trail, which also claimed the night's Outstanding Miniseries award. And Oscar winner Helen Mirren added to her 2007 trophies when she claimed an Outstanding Lead Actress honor for Prime Suspect: The Final Act. The British police drama also picked up directing and writing awards. Ugly Betty star America Ferrera was by far the night's most popular individual winner - a huge roar went up at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles when she was named Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series.
