« Pas de c**, pas de cash »
n-mo5 July 2010
The title means, "No a**, no cash." The sense conveyed by those words pretty handily sums up the light-but-heavy nature of this film. Jean-Pierre has it all: successful career, beautiful wife, pretty daughter, lots of money, a fabulous apartment and a personal driver to boot. And like so many people of his station in life, he is unhappy.

The reason: his wife, Odile, is also unhappy with their marriage. However, she does not show her unhappiness; she simply casts it aside by not putting out and by going about her lunching and shopping. After seven years of this, Jean-Pierre has had enough. He lets his problems slip to his chauffeur Richard, who has a similar problem, sans argent. But Richard knows what he WOULD do if he had money--and he suggests Jean-Pierre do the same.

Bye, bye, carte bleue (the universal French debit card) ! The premise is entertaining and the actors are excellent. The visuals are not spectacular for a film set in the Paris region, but that fits quite well with the theme: nouveaux riches with too much money, too much time, no taste at all and in general no substance, virility or profondeur. On the whole, the Ménard foyer is one of materialism and avoidance--thus the source of the problem.

However, the poor man doesn't get off any better: between Richard's misplaced machism and unwillingness or inability to communicate on complex ideas and Caroline's inflated ego and voluntary emotional detachment, that marriage is also on the rocks.

The longer the film goes on, though, the more it suffers: the premise is comic enough but the themes and the substance are very heavy, and the ultimate development of events leads to something that simply cannot be swallowed comically. The last third or so of the film would work much better as a melodrama, but it is not properly executed as such.

The ending is a welcome positive note, but on the whole I have to think that this would have been much better had it been shot on a more up-scale, serious, "classical" level.

Le shopping
jotix10025 February 2009
Frankly, the trailers for this film looked a lot more promising than what the finished product turned out to be. We are presented with what appears to be the way bored people with money do with their meaningless lives. Now, we are not opposed that Odile, a woman in a marriage that has seen better days, spends her time in the pricey Parisian boutiques frequented by women like her. After all, if she gets her kicks out of doing that, let her have her fun.

In the meantime, her husband Jean-Pierre is at his wits ends trying to win the affection of her wife. Instead of dealing directly with the problem, he follows his chauffeur Richard's advice seizing Odile's credit cards. If he thinks he will get away with that, he's got another thing coming to him. Richard, the driver, it turns out, has the same problems his boss has, without the money element.

Alexandra Leclere, the writer/director of this French farce, touches on themes that are deeper than what one sees on the screen. Consumerism, machismo, and non-communication between couples that have been married for a while, are some of the themes behind this comedy.

The exceptional cast gathered for the picture deserved better material than what they were given. The marvelous Natalie Baye does all she can with Odile. Christian Claver, who plays Jean-Pierre, makes a good impression. Gerard Lanvin's Richard is instrumental in giving his boss the solution for all his problems. Geraldine Pailhas appears as the wife of Richard, a lady with her own problems in a marriage that is also having difficulties.

There are a few laughs, but in the end the film doesn't completely satisfy. One wishes Ms. Leclere better luck next time.

A good French comedy
veroniquemathonnet31 January 2023
Great acting with a Christian Clavier in top form. Good chemistry between him and Gerard Lanvin. Worth watching.

The story is well written, but a bit too many products placements. That is a shame.

Nathalie Baye is as expected, in control.

You will have a pleasant time watching this movie. A safe bet. At the moment too many average or bad comedies out so it is quite refreshing to find a descent one that makes you giggle on a nice rythme without being an over the top comedy. I really think it's deserve more that the 5.4 /10 rating. I usually agree with IMDb's rating but this movie definitely deserve at least a 6.5/10.

unfaithful french wives.

Good performance, good production quality . plot is also simple. but the ending is not good, not satisfying.

two couples , 1 married and other living together. their wives lost the passion and they avoid to have sex with their husbands, and then husbands had enough of it and they do something about it.

the married couple is rich (only husband) , wife just enjoying shopping n outing. but she dont want sex with husband because he is snore at sleep? he burp ? he eats loud? the reasons which she doesn't like and they sleep different room.

2nd couple, guy is chauffeur of rich guy , his gf just write some books all the time, but she also dont want sex with him because she doesn't feel passion ? or she want to fulfil her dream?

the movie has really not good ending, especially for rich couple. kinda good ending for poor couple.

--------------spoilers----------------

in the end, rich husband saw his wife having an affair with another man, his heart broke. he knew he lost his wife, so he finally divorced her in the end, but as he loves her so he gave him the big apartment that she can live easily, at least. in the end, even wife doesnt regret having sex with other guy , but she want to come back to her husband but its too late.

last scene at lunch when he gave her check. she doesnt say anything or feel regret or sorry , she said " well i was almost rich".. what..? really? ungrateful and unfaithful wife ever.

atleast the another couple had good ending, he slapped her nd kicked her out.

A very mixed bag
richard-17877 August 2016
Warning: Spoilers
This movie is a very mixed bag of positives and negatives.

On the negative side: it is very formulaic. A husband wants to win back his wife's love, so he does foolish things, such a pretending to have a mistress to make her jealous. Everything backfires and, to take revenge, she takes a lover of sorts. Those are all clichés, and have nothing new to offer.

On the positive side: Christian Clavier and Nathalie Baye - and Patrick Chesnais - are all in top form, to the extent that one can be with very limited material. They create real, interesting, likable characters out of their roles.

So: the movie is worth watching for the acting by the leads. Just try to ignore the plot.

# 04 : The price to pay? easy: they are soulless ghouls (dvd)
leplatypus7 June 2019
It's a movie mainly about rich people and their problems and i don't give a s..t, especially if it's french bourgeoisie in Paris. With all their money, their cars, their shopping and fine clothing, their maid, their driver, they don't have any dust of intelligence or wisdom and they are poor in communicating and sharing together. If their only goals in life are money and sex, well, they don't know what life is about. In addition, this movie isn't funny because it tries to make laugh by taking shoots at the daily life of common people, that's to say us! Geraldine is the only welcoming light in this crap and she is clever enough to run away from it.

What Price Class
writers_reign7 April 2007
Warning: Spoilers
Alexandra Leclere is clearly going to become yet another French female director to reckon with; she followed the Short Bouche a bouche with the full-length Les Soeurs fachees for which she secured the services of Isabelle Huppert, Catherine Frot and Francois Berleand and did them all proud with a fine light comedy. For her second full-length entry she has cast Nathalie Baye and Christian Clavier - who knows a thing or two about writing and directing himself if anyone asks you - as an affluent husband and wife, complemented by Gerard Lanvin and Geraldine Pailhas as their working-class - Lanvin is Clavier's chauffeur, Pailhas a shop assistant - counterparts. It turns out that both husbands have the same problem; neither is getting any. Clavier's immediate solution is to withdraw Baye's Gold Credit Card but all that buys him is a reluctant statue. The two men bond after a fashion and Clavier moves into the front seat, takes Lanvin to five-star restaurants for lunch and invites the chauffeur and his wife to dinner without informing Baye. There's a lot of product placement going on which helps enhance the values that Baye lives by (sorry about that); Ferragamo and Dior are both shown via their bags and also the establishments whilst Pailhas is a salesperson at Galleries Lafeyette - when Baye is browsing there Pailhas accosts her and they play a long scene outside a sign saying Galleries Lafzyette Staff Entrance whilst for good measure Pailhas has the store's logo on her uniform. Another fine actor, Patrick Chesnais also turns up around the middle as 'other man' material for Baye and it all ends happily as films of this sort should do. A worthy successor to Les Soeurs fachees and highly recommend.

A frank and humorous dive into how idiotically and tragically men's toxic beliefs about women can ruin good relationships
dani_fz23 September 2022
I stumbled upon this movie totally by accident and decided to watch it. I don't regret this decision because it turned out to be a quite entertaining and educative comedy. It has a very good lesson concerning how much some men tend to have toxic and false ideas about women because of their poor communication skills with them. It also shows how such men tend to be ungrateful for the roles that the women in their lives play. It's not surprising then that it is such men, as also shown in the movie, that tend to be abusive to women and to try to paint themselves as the "real victims" instead of the women that they abuse and hurt.

All these priceless lessons are explored in the movie through the marital relationships of Jean-Pierre Ménard (Christian Clavier), a wealthy businessman, and Richard (Gérard Lanvin), a middle-class man that is employed as Ménard's chauffeur. Although both men exist in different socioeconomic classes, the movie successfully manages to show that the toxic gender and relationships beliefs that they bear have similar consequences for the women in their lives. Both men, as a result, end up abusing and hurting these women and, in the end, awaken to the realization that it has always been them, and not the women, that were the problems in their respective relationships. All this may seem abstract and boring but I encourage - strongly recommend in fact - that you watch the movie to see how it's all played out in a funny and entertaining way - except for the abuse parts, which are really sad and somewhat infuriating. The performances are also great from all the cast members and they're an attraction of their own.

That said, a couple of negatives I noted about the movie include its poor racial representation and its not having focused on its women characters more. It also communicates a number of concerning and negative gender stereotypes. Despite these though, I highly recommend this movie to lovers of comedy and to all who are looking for a light but thoughtful movie that they could enjoy watching while unwinding from their daily routines. In conclusion, I could have give this movie a 10 but the aforementioned negatives have lowered it to an 8.
